Eddie 'Koiki' Mabo was an Australia Torres Strait Islander, born in Murray Island, his mother died soon after childbirth and his father deemed himself unable to properly raise his son, giving him to his brother (Koiki's uncle), and so changed his last name to 'Mabo' -

Death of Eddie Mabo
Eddie Mabo died due to cancer at the age of 55. He did not live long enough to see his push for Aboriginal land rights go through. -

5 months after the death of Eddie Mabo, the Australian High Court announced its decision regarding the case of Aboriginal land ownership. The overturning of the legal doctrine of terra nullius. Mabo vs Queensland was at an end with a victory to the Eddie Mabo
