On 26th January 1788 Britain won the race to be the first country to officially claim what we call now Australia.Although in 1606 Dutch navigator Willem Janszoon was the first to find the country he didn't claim it.But the country that did claim it was Britain.They needed the land for their convicts as the prisons where full in Britain.They originally sent their convicts to America but lost a war to America and that war then decided Britain had to find a new place to send their convicts to. -
Establishment of Van Diemens Land
A man named Anthony van Diemen sent an explorer named Abel Tasman to discover the area in 1642.In 1803 the island was settled by the British as a penal colony.Then it got its unofficial name Van Diemens Land and became apart of NSW.In 1825 it became a independent colony and its first governor was George Auther. -
