Poland
Rifka and her family go across the Poland border where they are examined by docters. Rifka gets typhus by the docter here also. -
Slowed Down
Rifka gets sick with typhus so she asks her parents if they can get off the train. They agree and go to her fathers cousins house where they stay in his barn. Soon after the mom, dad and older brother Nathan get sick to and are taken to the hospital. Rifka and Saul stay in the barn. -
Hard Times
Rifka is still weal. While sleeping the inn keepers daughter comes and eats her food. So Rifka tells Saul but he just tells her to eat it and not save it. Rifka soon gets better and goes to visit her mother in the hospital. She stays there in the room with her mother and talks to her even though the mom looks dead. Rifka is still very small. She can fit two dresses a shawl and a cloak she still looks extremely small. -
A New Friend
Rifka meets a girl on the train and offers to braid her hair but not till later does she realize the girl has ringworm. -
Rifka is Brave
While there family is on the train hiding, Rifka is trying to stalling the guards so that they don't find her brother who ran away from the army. Her plan works and the guards don't find anyone. -
Horrible News
When the family arrives to get tickets to go to Amerie they must go through a doctors examination. With that Rifka is told she had ringworm and is not allowed to go to America. She must wait until she is cured. -
A Place To Wait
Rifka and her faimly go to the HIAS to see what they can do about Rifke. They offer the idea that everyone goes to America execpt Rifka. Rifka can go to Belgium and stay with a family and go the hospital everyday until she is cured. -
A Different Life Style
Rifka leaves for Belgium the same day the rest of her family goes to America. When she is in Belgium she stays with Gaston and Maria, an older couple. Most of the time she stays in her room and writes or reads. When she ident doing that though she is usually has her treatment with Sister Katrina. -
The Best News
Rifka is told by Sister Katrina she is all better and is now allowed to go into America. She is so exited to be re-joined with her family -
An Adventure
Rifka is on the boat where everyone is equal and no cabnits or steerage. She meets a young man named Pieter. Who she loves to hang out with. And has a special bond with. -
A Storm Takes A Friend
While on the boat there is a very bad storm. All the passengers are rushed to the steerage area while the crew workers are abover on the deck. After the storm passes everyone comes up and Rifka finds out Pieter was thrown over board. -
A Statue Greets Them All
Rifka and the others on the boat enter New York Harbor where they are greeted by Lady Liberty -
Bad News
Rifka arrives at Ellis Island and must be examined before entering the country. Rifka is told she may not enter America and muct stay on the island and can not even see her family. They do this because they think she will not marry because of her baldness and the government does not want to pay for her to be taken care of -
A Shadow
Since Rifka is at the island she is helping out with a baby who has typhus since she already had it. Then one day during lunch she meets a russian peasent kid who refuses to eat. She forces him to eat and ever after that he follows her around. -
Saul Comes
Saul comes to visit Rifka at the island doesnt believe how much older she looks. He finds it hard to believe that this is his littlw sister. But Rifka is just glad to see someone from her family and asks all about everyone. She even finds out she is an aunt. -
Mama Comes
Rifka's mother comes and visits her. She is so exitced to finally see her mom in over a year. But Rifka must go and help out so her mom just sits there and watches her -
One less person
The baby with typhus that Rifka had been taken care of has died alone while sleeping. -
One Big Choice
Today is the day the docters chose if Rifka can go into America, They want to see her head but she stalls it by giving a big speech about how she doesnt need hair to surrive in America. Since she thinks she has ringworm she trys really hard to make sure they dont see her head. The docters agree with her and say she can go into America. But then when everyone is hugging her, her kerchief falls off. When they make her take it off she is told that it is her hair growing back.
