A singer, actress, and activist, this is Lena Horne, born June 30th, 1917 in the city of New York. She was known as one of the “top African American performers” of her time. She was very versatile with her talents, and also used her platform to help African Americans in times of need. -
Her Claim to Fame
At the age of 16, she began performing at a club in New York City called the “Cotton Club” where her career started. She then made a Broadway debut & became apart of Noble Sissle & His Orchestra as a singer. -
Activist Info
Although entertaining was her specialty, Lena also engaged in activist activity. She was a member of the “Progressive Citizens of America” group, and it caused her to be blacklisted from being able to work in any other movies at the moment. For the time being, Lena went back to working in nightclubs -
The Great Return
By the late 1950's Lena Horne returned back to the screens & making music after being blacklisted but she still remained engaged with political activity. -

In 1971, Lena lost her father, son, & husband. She then decided to backout the spotlight for a bit. -

In 1978, Lena was exposed to the updated version of the movie she starred in previously called "The Wiz", she then decided to make a comeback in Hollywood. -
TV Appearances
Throughout the 80's Lena Horne made guest appearances on different shows such as "Sanford and Son" , "The Cosby Show" , and "A Different World". But then Lena Decided to do her own thing and create her own show called "The Lady and Her Music". -
The Last Album
In 1998 Lena Horne recorded her last album, "Being Myself." and she then retired from performing soon after at the age of 81. -
LEGEND
