The Great Depression
The Great Depression was due to overproduction, uncontrolled credit buying, weak banking structure, and uneven distribution of wealth. This caused nationalism due to, isolation policies, failure to keep international agreements, and the rise of fascism. This lead to, decrease of world trade, the importance of economic cooperation and institutions, and contributed to the deterioration of international relations. -
Japanese Invasion of Manchuria
The Japanese invaded Manchuria in order to expand territory and power. They gained natural resources and raw materials. This was Japans first invasion of China, leading them to settle there for most of WWII. -
The Holocaust
This was a very tragic and horrific event that happened during WWII. The Holocaust was a mass genocide, Nazi Germany wanted to exterminate Jews and other groups of people they did not approve of. -
Hitler Becomes Chancellor
Hitler was voted and Chancellor and began to increase Nazi power. Hitler wanted to expand German dominance. This is significant because Hitler caused a lot in WWII. -
Reciprocal Tariff Act of 1934
Gave the president power to negotiate bilateral, reciprocal trade agreements with other countries. Allowed the U.S. to trade with other countries and to further themselves. -
Remilitarization of the Rhineland
After WWI Hitler refused to pay for reparations, an decided to make plans to invade Rhineland, in fear that France would increase their military presence there. The result was other European nations having a lack of power over Germany. -
Mussolini Abyssinian War
Italy invaded Abyssinian, accusing them of aggression in oasis. Hitler supported Italy's war and and it brings them together as allies. -
Rome-Berlin Axis
Italy's foreign minister met with German officials to informally link together. This marked the start of the Axis. -
Leaving the League of Nations
Due to their commitment to Germany, Italy left the League of Nations and joined the Axis Powers. They left due to the league not being economically safe, as well as joining the Axis gave them more power to win the war and gain land. -
Anschluss
In order to further Nazi power Hitler attempted to unify Germany and Austria into a German state. Due to Nazi support in Austria the people welcomed them with acceptance. Because of this Germany gained, citizens, an increase in military, resources, and foreign exchange. -
Kristallnacht
Also known as The Night of the Broken Glass. A member of the German Embassy was shot, giving Hitler and propaganda Minister Goebbels and opportunity for Germans to seek revenge. This lead to mob violence, which caused the German storm troops and Hitler's youth to be violent towards the Jewish. -
Germany Invades Czechosalvakia
Germany invaded and occupied the Czech provinces of Bohemia and Moravia in the rump Czecho-Slovak state, in flagrant violation of the Munich Pact. The German occupation authorities refashioned the two provinces as a German protectorate, annexed directly to the Reich, but under the leadership of a Reich Protector. -
The Pack of Steel
A pact of alliance between Germany and Italy, military and political alliance. It made the Axis Powers official. -
Neutrality Act of 1939
Lifted the Arms embargo, and put all trades with threatening nations, under cash and carry. The ban on loans remained. As long as the countries provided money and transport the U.S. would sell arms. -
Operation Barbarossa
This was the code name for when Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union. Germany planned to colonize western parts of the Soviet Union. Hitler wanted to expand and provide living space for the "master race.". -
Pearl Harbor
A surprise attack on a U.S. military base, Pearl Harbor, by the Japanese. The Japanese wanted to destroy U.S. fleet units.
