Legacies of historical globalization in Canada

  • Period: Jan 1, 1497 to Dec 31, 1497

    First Contact

Giovanni Caboto claimed the island of Newfoundland for Britain. Throughout the 1500's ships from Britain, France and Portugal aswell as other European countries had been sailing the Atlanrtic waters for fish. The Europeans often landed by the coast to stock up and prepare the fish so they were ready for the trip back, Thus meeting the First Peoples. This created the Legacy of the mix between the European culture and the First Nations. for example: Catholicism was forced upon the First Nations.

    Fur Trade

The fur trade was very high in demand amongst Canada and the First Peoples helped the French make it work, it created companies with ships and sailors, multiple trade posts and traders and large amounts of pelts could be transported. This created a legacy because it reduced the population of beavers creating a high quality and high in demand fashion trend throughout Europe, it caused the French to stop searching for route to Asia, it also created an income for the First Peoples.
  • Period: to

    French rule

The French were very superior in the Seven Years War and because of this the Early French Rule became a constructing factor of the legacies left, such as waterways (long-lot system) culture and traditions like religious needs, laws etc as well as the Civil law became intact after the small war between the French and the Ouednat was over
  • Period: to

    Monopolies

The Hudson Bay Company had a huge monopoly over the fur trade and it is still known well today in the 21st century. For example the store named "The Bay". Until the Northwest company had taken over and was finally of high social status than HBC for a few years, they then mixed and became the ultimate monopoly. The legacy left was the impact left on the fur trade, it was changed and had become more advanced. Later on the beavers which were in high demand became scarce.
  • Period: to

    Treaties

First nations and the Europeans bagan to write treaties rather than having oral treaties like the first nations did before the first contact. At first the British had just wanted to have treaties so that their settlers could live safely. The colonial governments also made oral promieses, This created a legacy of issues amongst the two cultures because the treaties were often not kept and the first nations also didnt understand the treaties. ex: beothuk
  • Period: to

    Clashing of Social Views

The First peoples and the Europeans had different views upon land ownership. The First Peoples believed that the land belonged to everyone and that they were just guardians, whereas the Europeans believed that land ownership was a sign of superiority and displayed your social status. this left a legacy of conflict between the two cultures creating problems in the future based on disagreements. The legacy of the diminishing first peoples culture and superior european culture was created.
  • Period: to

    The Seven Years War

The Seven Years War left legacies all over the world within the countries that were involved. The most important legacy was Britian and France obtaining great imperial power and wealth as well as the British cuktures being inflicted upon the First Nations due to the instructions of the king of Britain telling British settlers to go to Quebec. Another legacy left was of the policies and the proclamation.
  • Period: to

    Depopulation of First Peoples

Depopulation of the First Nations occured when the Europeans had arrived in the early 1500's. This left a legacy because European diseases were introduced to North Americans such as the First nations which effected us tremendously due to the fact of us not yet being immune as they were, thus disease killing many. Another legacy left would be that First Nations were driven inland creating confict once again, starvation and their relationship with culture and land was deprived.
  • Period: to

    The Indian Act

The Indian Act left many legacies, one of them would be the banning of traditions which are now lost in time today, another legacy left would be how First Nations are in a snse slaves to the government because they have to do as told or be over ruled anyways, This is expressed by having documents stating your "Indian Status". whereas now First Nations have rights to pursue land without consent, which is fair as we have such rights aswell.
  • Period: to

    Residential Schools

Legacies left from residential schooling would be the loss of culture as well as family, This is a legacy becaue as children were taken away from their families they were forced to in a sense forget their old ways of life and culture and assimilate into the north american culture. Another legacy left would be the intense conflict that still exists between the government and the children for the children were abused in many unforgetable ways, scarring them emotionally.
