California Farm Workers Protest For Wage Raises
Beginning on Septermber 8, 1965, farm workers in Delano, California, led by Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta, went on strike. To try and gain higher wages, the workers refused to work in their fields and held large protests against the purchase of grapes, which most of the fields grew. They stood in front of grocery stores and encouraged others to not purchase grapes. -

Johnson Signs Immigration Act
On October 3, 1965, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Immigration Act of 1965 at the foot of the Statue of Liberty. This act provided an easier immigration process to relatives of people already living within the United States. Since there was such a large Lation population in the south, the amount of immigration from countries such as Mexico raised drastically. -

Corky Gonzales Founds Crusade for Justice
During 1966, former boxer Rodolfo "Corky" Gonzales began the Crusade for Justice. This orginizations goal was to aid the Chicano movement. They provided legal aid, theater, spanish languages newspapers, and other community services such as free billingual classes and Chicano culture lessons for Latino Americans. -

Tijerina Fights for Promised Lands
Reies lopez Tijerina, the founder of La Alianza Federal de Mercedes (Federal Alliance of Land Grants), was a supporter for the Chicano Movement, which fought for Lation Rights. La Alianza Federal de Mercedes fought to regain lands promised to Mexican Americans in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Tijerina and his followers stormed into the Rio Arriba County Courthouse in New Mexico to demand the lands be returned to their rightful owners. This brought national awareness of the Chicano cause. -
Students of Crystal City Walk Out
On December 9, 1969, Latino students of Crystal City Texas held a school walkout. Aided by Jose Angel Gutierrez, these students, who were members of the Mexican American Youth Orginization (MAYO) and represented 80% of the school population, protested outside of their school. They fought for more Mexican American teachers and more billigual and biculutral education within their school. Many other walkouts in the southwest quickly followed. -

La Raza Unida Party Forms
In 1970, Jose Angel Gutierrez, who founded the Mexiacn American Youth Orginization, formed the La Raza Unida Political Party in Crystal City, Texas. This party campaigned for billigual education, improved public services, education for children of migrant workers, and an end to job discrimination. The party got elected to many small offices in the southern states, such as Texas, New Mexico, and California. -
Brown Berets Spreading
The Brown Berets were founded in Los Angeles due to gorwing brutality from the police towards Latinos. They were strong advocates for La Raza Unida Party, as well as the recovery of historic lands in New Mexico, the farm workers campaigns in the southwest, and the protest of the high death rate of Chicano soldiers in the Vietnam War. Many people questioned their means and methods due to their assosciation with the militant Black Panther Party and the violence that occured at their demonstrations -
