Scylla and Charybdis were immortal and irresistible monsters who distracted sailors throughout their journey. Scylla had six heads and twelve feet, while Charybdis, was another monster but a whirlpool. -

Odysseus holds his course tight against the cliffs of Scylla's lair. As he and his men study Charybdis on the other side of the sea, the heads of Scylla swoop down and gobble up six of the sailors. Odysseus was already warned about this by Circe so he was prepared. -

Lotus Eaters were people who only ate fruit from the Lotus Tree. Those whoever ate the fruit from the Lotus Tree would forget about going back home and would want to stay and continue eating from the Lotus Tree. -

In this location, Odysseus lost 3 of his men to the Lotus flower. When he saw what the flower did to his 3 men, he immediately dragged them into the ship and left the tree immediately. He didn’t want anymore of his men to eat from the Lotus Tree. -

Circe was a sorceress (daughter of Helios). She was very attractive. Circe turned Odysseus men into pigs. Circe didn’t want Odysseus to leave so she tried magic on him, but Odysseus resisted it. When she saw it didn’t work she bathes him, feeds him, and invites her in her bed. -

Circe was significant to Odysseus because she gave him advice on how to return back to Ithaca. She told him what he should and should not do when trying to get back home. -

Sirens were beautiful winged monster women who were part bird and part human. Many sailors who were sailing to islands got distracted by these women because of their beauty and uniqueness. But Their goal were to trick sailors into going off their course and causing them to die a rough death. -

Aeolus- Bag of wind
In the Odyssey, Aeolus gives Odysseus a bag, (to ensure his passage home) which is filled with evil wind inside. Odysseus sail men didn’t trust him so they opened the bag and the winds escaped. It returned them back to the island. -

The Bag of of Wind was significant because Aeolus needed to make sure Odysseus was going to get home safe. Also, the opening of the bag of winds caused Odysseus and his men to travel to Circes palace and travel back home. -

Cyclops was a giant, one eyed creature. The son of Poseidon, god of the sea. He likes to eat whatever he can get his hands onto. Cyclops got into a conflict with Odysseus and his men. -

Odysseus fell asleep, and Eurylochus convinced Odysseus men to eat the Cattle of the god of the Sun: “it's better to die at sea from the wrath of the gods than to die of hunger.” He told them. When Odysseus woke up to found that the men had broken their oaths and killed some of the gods cattle. -

What Odysseus gained from listening to the Sirens was their knowledge and gifts of wisdom for the future. He learned about what was going to happen in the future and what wats were about to happen.
