Hughes' parents divorced when he was a small child. Hughes was raised by his grandmother until he was thirteen, when he moved to Lincoln, IL. to live with his mother and her husband. It was here thatHughes began writing poetry.

After graduation, Hughes spent a year in Mexico and a year a Columbia U. He worked odd jobs during these years, such as asissant cook, launderer, and a busboy. He also travelled to Africa and Europe working as a seaman.

Hughes moved to Wsshington D.C in November 1924.

The Weary Blues, Hughes' first book of poetry, was published in 1926 by Alfred A. Knopf.
