Railway Strike of 1877
Baltimore and Ohio railroad ignited a series of strikes. This was the first time federal troops were being called out for the first time to deal with the situation. -
Haymarket Riot
The riot was in Chicago at the Haymarket Square and workers were in support of an eight hour day. An unknown person threw a bomb at a police, then the police fired into the crowd. -
Gompers Founded AFL
Samuel Gompers founded the American Federation of Labor after the Haymarket incident. AFL was a collection of trade unions. -
Sherman Anti Trust Act
Congress wanted to block business monopolies. Many employers were against the unions -
Homestead Strike
300 Pinkerton detectives were hired by the company and were greeted by angry workers with violence and became a nasty battle when many were killed. -
Pullman Strike
Union workers walked out of Pullman Company in Illinois. -
IWW Founded
Western miners formed the Industrial Workers of the world at a convention in Chicago. IWW is one of the best of all organized labor groups. -
ILGWU Strike
ILGWU is the International Ladies Garment Union, and the strike took place in New York. The workers demanded 20% pay and a 52 hour work week. More than 20,000 workers from 500 different factories walked out of the job. -
Triangle Shirtwaist Factory
A fire in Manhatten, New York killed 156 women workers. -
First State Minimum Wage Law
Massachusetts was the first to adopt this law. Many followed after. -
Federal Department of Labor Established
This was established under President Taft and the department emphasized pro-labor stance.
