The first Labor Day was celebrated on September 5 1882. It was celebrated in New York in compliance with the Central Labor Union. -
American Federation of Labor
It was a national federation of labor unions. They sought for better wages, work environments, shorter hours, and economic gains. It was dominated by craft unions and was the largest grouping of unions in its first 50 years. -
The Shirtwaist Fire
It was one of the deadliest industrial fire in the cities history. The owners had locked the stairways to prevent the workers from taking breaks and to prevent theft. -
Samuel Gompers
He is a key person in labor union history. He founded the AFL and served as its leader. He promoted thorough organization and harmony among the craft unions. -
1930s General Motor Strike
This changed the United Automobile Workers into a major labor union and led to the organization of the automobile industry. They succeeded with increased pay and workers were allowed to speak during lunch. -
Fair Labor Standards Act of 1935
This is the act that sets minimum wage, maximum work hours, and overtime pay. It also prevents child labor -
Taft-Harvey
This law restricted the activity of labor unions. It also restricted the power labor unions had. -
Steel Strike of 1959
This was a 116 day labor union strike. They succeeded and earned higher wages.
