First printing press in the Canary Islands
In 1751 the first printing press in the Canary Islands arrived in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and La Laguna. -
Opening of the Aguere Continental Hotel
It was built in 1760 by Captain Don Cesáreo de la Torre y Ceballos, it was the residence of Bishop Luis Folgueras and also the College of the Instituto de Canarias. In 1885, it was converted into a hotel thanks to the British Benjamin Renshaw.
It was declared a Historic-Artistic Heritage of the city in 2006. -
Inauguration of the Tram
It was inaugurated on April 7, 1901, from Santa Cruz to La Laguna. The first part, up to La Laguna, was designed by the engineer and soldier from Segorb Julio Cervera Baviera. In 1904 the line was extended to Tacoronte and the Cabildo de Tenerife would buy the company in March 1927.
In 2007, a new tram was inaugurated, also with the Santa Cruz–La Laguna route. This is the only existing rail transport in the Canary Islands. -
Leal Theater of San Cristóbal de La Laguna
The Leal Theater is a building that was built by Antonio Leal in 1915. It was widely used in various shows, and has been recognized for being the venue for the first film projections in La Laguna thanks to the famous businessmen brothers Juan de la Cruz and Antonio from the cross. -
Los Rodeos Airport
It was built at the request of Lufthansa, the German aviation company, which wanted to connect the island with Berlin via Seville. For that, the Cabildo de Tenerife bought some land to be able to build it.
The first flight was in 1929, coming from Seville. In 1930 it was opened to national traffic, and in 1943 the construction of the terminal was completed.
In 1946, it was opened to all kinds of national and international traffic, thus becoming the main entry route for tourists. -
Ganadería de La Laguna
In 1950, the cattle ranch continues being well in the municipality, although with less vitality.
La Laguna was in one of the top positions for the number of total cattle and number of farms. -
Tram Accident
On November 14, 1956, a tram broke its brakes and crashed into a wall on Cuesta Piedra, killing a 16-year-old boy and injuring several others. The Cabildo suspended the tram for a year, and later the track would begin to be built. The six million pesetas obtained from the site where the La Cuesta station was located and the sale of collected materials would be used to replace the road pavements, after the tracks were raised. -
University Hospital of the Canary Islands is founded
In 1971, the General and Clinical Hospital of Tenerife, known today as Hospital Universitario de Canarias, was founded. It is located in La Cuesta, within the municipality of La Laguna, occupying an area of 71,000 m², and is close to the Autopista del Norte de Tenerife. -
Los Rodeos Airport Accident
On March 27, 1977, the Gran Canaria airport had to be temporarily closed due to a terrorist threat. For this reason, the Los Rodeos airport was operating beyond its means. In addition, there was a dense fog passing through the airport.
As a consequence, two planes crashed, and it was the most serious air accident of 1977, the most catastrophic in an air collision on the ground and the deadliest in Spain.
Due to this accident, the works of the southern airport were accelerated. -
Museum of History and Anthropology of Tenerife
El Museo de Historia y Antropología de Tenerife fue inaugurado en 1993 en la calle San Agustín de San Cristóbal de La Laguna.
La idea del museo es divulgar la historia de la isla de Tenerife, ofreciendo una visión general del desarrollo institucional, socioeconómico y cultural de la isla, desde el siglo XV hasta el siglo XX.
El edificio se conoce también como Casa Lercaro, porque fue la casa del teniente general Francisco Lercaro de León. -
Agriculture in La Laguna
La Laguna was always an agricultural municipality and the one that contributed the most to the economy.
In 1999, it was the municipality with the largest plowed land, with 1,676 hectares. Cereals, fruit trees, tomatoes, numerous vegetables and vineyards are cultivated, and the areas of banana trees and ornamental plants stand out. -
Third sector
La Laguna, en la última década, se ha enfocado en el sector terciario. Tiene el mayor número de centros comerciales de la isla y la mayor parte del capital comercial.
Los servicios y actividades llevan beneficios económicos a todo el territorio. Es un atractivo turístico gracias a sus recursos histórico-culturales, naturales, paisajísticos y recreaciones (senderos, edificios históricos o playas). -
La Laguna Transport Interchange
The new La Laguna transport interchange was inaugurated on March 24, 2011. The company Transportes Interurbanos de Tenerife SA (Titsa) is in charge of managing and operating this infrastructure.
It is a place where buses from the TITSA company arrive, taxis and the tram passes through the station.
This interchange replaced the previous San Benito bus station.
