Missouri Compromise of 1820
Congress passed a bill saying the Missouri could be added as a slave state as long as slavery was banned in the rest of the Louisiana Purchase. The addition of Missouri to the United States would break the balance of the North and the SOuth since there was 11 states eah. -
Wilmot Proviso
Proposed by David Wilmot, it was made to ban slavery in all of the territory gained by the Mexican-American War. -
Compromise of 1850
Allowed California to be admitted as a free state in order to keep the balance of the North and the South. This also strengthened the Fugitive Slave Act. -
Fugitive Slave Act
Allowed the return and capture of all runaway slaves. -
Bleeding Kansas
From 1854-, was violence between pro and anti slavery during the settlement of Kansas. Both parties came to try and force the desicion. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
Since Kansas and Nebraska both crossed the border between the north and the south, due to popular sovereignty, white settlers were given the choice if they wanted slavery. -
Dred Scott vs. Sandford
Escape slave Dred Scott went to court claiming he deserved freedom. He was denied bcause the judge claimed that slaves were't allowed citizenship because they were considered property. -
Lincoln-Douglas Debates
A series bates between of political debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A Douglas during their run for a seat in the Illinois senate. Douglas supported popullar sovereignty and made the Kansass-Nebraska Act. However, Lincoln said the US would not survive being half pro slave and half anti slave.
