Fort Laramie Treaty
The Fort Laramie Treaty was signed between the United States Treaty Commissioners and representatives of Cheyenne, Sioux, Arapaho, Crow, Assiniboine, Mandan, Hidasta, and Arikara nations. The Treaty gave the NAtive Americans control of much of the Great Plains. -
The Know Nothing Party
The Know Nothing party, formed to promote nativism, is soon split over the slavery issue. Opposed Immigrants and favored native born citizens. -
"Bleeding Kansas"
It was a period of violence during the settling of the Kansas territory. Rival Governments had been established in Kansas by late 1855. One backed by proslavery Missourians and the other by antislavery group. -
Lincold - Douglas Debates
From August 21 until October 15, Stephen Douglas battled Abraham Lincoln in face to face debates around the state. The winner had a seat in the senate. -
Lincoln Elected for President
Lincoln is elected for President in 1860.
