Established the right for citizens to vote for or against in the new territories in the United States. -
The raid at Harpers Ferry
Led by John Brown, a group of armed abolitionists made an effort to initiate an armed slave revolt. U.S marines under Robert E. Lee captured Brown and executed him. -
Presidential Election of 1860
Lincoln opposed the expansion of slavery and he felt that it was morally wrong. He won the election, but wasn't on most ballots in the South so the South was confused. South Carolina secedes from the Union. -
First Shots fired by Confederates
Confederate soldiers fire the first shots at Fort Sumter to start the Civil War. Lincoln has no choice but to declare war. -
Battle of Bull Run
The first major battle of the Civil War. The confederates win, and shock the North with their skills. -
Battle of Antietam
The most bloodiest battle in the Civil War. The Union take the victory. General Lee ended up withdrawing to Virginia. -
Lincoln Issues Emancipation Proclamation
Following the Battle of Anietam, Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation which allowed all slaves to be free. He encouraged the slaves to run away. -
54th Massachusetts
The Union accepts African Americans as soldiers and the all black regiment is called the 54th Massachusetts. This makes the Union much stronger, and the South much angrier. -
Battle of Chancellorsville
The Confederates take another victory. The battle of Fredericksburg made them look too tough to beat. However, Robert E. Lee's right hand man, Stonewall Jackson, is accidentally killed by one of his own men. -
Gettysburg
Lee was too confident and ordered an attack that would require going up hill towards the Union. The Unions destroyed them. It was a turning point of the war and it helped Americans look ahead and focus on rebuilding. -
Battle of Atlanta
Total war is now fully engaged. The war is almost over after this, and the Union takes the victory here. -
Richmond/Appomattox Court House
The Union takes the victory, and the Civil War is over. The Capital of the Confederates, Richmond, falls to the Union. -
Assassination of Abraham Lincoln
John Wilkes Booth killed Abraham Lincoln at the Ford's Theater on April 14th. Andrew Johnson becomes the new president. -
Ratification of 13th Amendment
The thirteenth amendment abolishes slavery in the United States -
Impeachment of Andrew Johnson
Johnson fired the secratery of war, violated the office of Tenure Act, and vetoed a record breaking amount. The House of Representatives bring the impeachment charges, but he will be found innocent by 1 vote.
