League of Nations
The League of Nations was an international organization that was formed to prevent future world wars. In the beginning, a few countries, including the United States, did not join either because they didn't want to or the weren't invited to. So it was not a real uniting of nations. Once the League proved it was not strong, may countries left. The League did not do what the were supposed to because when countries in the league were getting attacked, they didn't do anything. -
The Washington Naval Conference
The worlds largest naval powers gathered in Washington D.C to discuss ways to relieve tensions that were growing in East Asia and arms limitations. Nine nations attended this conference but Soviet Russia was not one of them so they were not aware of the agreements and the treaties that were made. And even though their was an agreement, many navies were still suspicious about each other. One treaty made countries scrap 1,900,000 tons of warships. -

The Great Depression in The United States
When the American stock market crashed and the economy was terrible, America wanted Germany to repay some if it's debt. This caused the German economy to suffer which helped Hitler rise to power. -
Japan Invades Manchuria
When Japan invaded Manchuria, they did so without declaring war which went against the rules of the league of nations. Japan had a lot of industry but the were running out of land for natural resources. They wanted to take over Manchuria so they could use it to acquire natural resources like oil, lumber, and rubber. The league of nations couldn't really punish Japan which showed that they were not strong. -
Adolf Hitler is Appointed Chancellor of Germany
Hitler was one of the most powerful dictators in history because of his ruling over Germany. He was a very aggressive leader and the war was not a surprise. Leaders of France and Great Britain met with Hitler and they made agreements and Hitler made promises to them that he ended up breaking. Once France and Britain heard about this, they declaired war. -

Germany Bombs Geurnica
The Germans bombed the town of Guernica in Basque because the town was being used as a communication center and weapon manufacturer for the Spanish.Three quarters of the city was completely destroyed and there were around 200 casualties. Immediately after the bombing, it grew international attention and everyone viewed it as an intentional attack on civilians. -
