    No more US aid to South Korea
    US congress became nervous that if too much aid is given to South Korea Syngham Rhee, the South Korean president, will use it to invade North Korea. The US sent light arms and armor, but held off on tanks and aircrafts. In January 1950, the House of Representatives defeated the Korean Aid Bill by a single vote, cutting off US aid to South Korea.

    North Korea attacks South Korea
    North Korean forces cross the 38th parallel, the boundary dividing North and South Korea, and attack South Korea. The United States condemned the invasion with Security Council Resolution 82. However, North Korea ignored Security Council Resolution and continued onward to Seoul, South Korea's capital.

    Once the US knew that North Korea ignored Security Council Resolution 82, they immediately began air and naval forces to try and stop the North Korean forces. General Douglass MacArthur, beloved World War II hero, flies to South Korean headquarters in Suwon to assume command.

    The Battle of Pusan Perimeter
    The Battle of Pusan Perimeter begins. From August 4 to September 15, the United States army in South Korea withstood numerous KPA (North Korea People's Army) attacks, The United States Air Force interrupted KPA movements by destroying 32 brideges and bombing conveys, stopping most daytime raild and road traffic. To decrease KPA supplies the USAF destroyed depots, petroluem refineries and harbors.

  • Third Phase Offensive

    Chinese and North Korean forces launch the Third Phase Offensive. By the end of the first week, they take Seoul, South Korea's capital. General MacArthur considers using nuclear weapons against the Chinese or North Korean interiors to stop supply chains.

    President Truman removes General Douglass MacArthur from his command as a commander of the UN forces in South Korea. Truman thought that MacArthur had been "unable to give his wholehearted support to the policies of the UN and USA." President Truman was then targeted for many attacks and some Republicans called for his impeachment.
  • Peace talks begin

    Peace talks begin
    The war had stretched from the southern tip of the South Korean Peninsula to the Yalu River on the North Korea-China border. The war turned into a stalemate with Chinese and North Korean forces evenly matched against South Korean and UN forces. Realizing that neither side would be the victor, the combatants met in the village of Kaesong, North Korea to negotiate. The talks dragged on for two years before a settlement was reached.

    The peace treaty was signed at Panmunjom, however, South Korea does not sign the peace treaty. The 38th parallel was reset as the boundary between the communist North Korea and the anti-communist South Korea. Cold War tensions continued, unaffected.
