Start of the Korean War
In 1945 the Soviet Union declared war on Japan. By 1948 the north and south of Korea were two separate governments. On the 25 of June 1950 china invaded the south. The Untied Nations Security Council recognized the this was an act as an invasion. -
Russians Arrive in Korea
In the last days of World War II, Russian troops begin moving into northern Korea. There are not yet any American troops on the peninsula. -
U.S. in Seoul
American forces finally reach Seoul, where they accept the Japanese surrender of southern Korea. -
Korea divided between North and South
Following Japanese surrender in there own war, Soviets maintained military presence in the North with American troops in the South. Temporary border at 38th parallel established. -
US to Leave Korea
American forces begin to prepare to withdraw from Korea. They hope to leave the South as an independent state under the leadership of the pro-American conservative Dr. Syngman Rhee.

US Response
In June the US Secretary of State Dean Acheson told the President that North Korea has invaded the South. They might need to act and help so they don't have another Adolf Hitler. The US response was to build and send units and help Soth Korea with the war. The US was low on men and guns. -
Tanks Reach Seoul
On this day the North Korean tank are just reaching the outskirts of town. The Korea's were just about to take the city. -
Battle of Inchon
General MacArthur want his men to have an amphibious landing to get to Inchon. After the war started General Edward Almond lead 40,000 into battle. At the end of the bettle Seoul was recapture and back in the good hands. -
U.S. troops invade at Inchon
In surprise landing behind enemy lines, US forces push North Korean army back north of the 38th parallel. US forces surprised attack was very planned out. -
Chiese divisions enter fighting
With increased opposition, UN offensive had to stalled. Chinese troops push UN forces back across 38th parallel and capture Southern capital of Seoul. -
Threats of Atomic Warfare
The US said if any one of the North Korean forces crosses the border or try to invaded again that they would drop a atomic bomb. When we threat there was a leak that china was building up troops to invaded Taiwan but they still were concerned about the North and South Korea. -
Truman relieves MacArthur of command
Following several warnings about insubordination, Truman angers public (69% support MacArthur) by firing the US commander. He was not doing his duty said Truman. -
Korea becomes campaign issue in 1952 presidential election
Eisenhower pledges to go to Korea to end the war and get peace between the North and the South. VP candidate Nixon contends Democrats had caved in to communists in Korea and that Democrat presidential candidate Stevenson should be called "Adlai the Appeaser" -
Reestablished the division of Korea
Formal peace treaty never signed by the North or the South. Over 1,000,000 Koreans and 54,000 Americans killed in conflict plus thousands who die as prisoners of war. Home and family torn apart.

Korean Wars ended
The war was over but the border between the countries will never be the same. The border is now covered with mine and fences and wire.
