    the state of political hostility that existed between the Soviet bloc countries and the US-led Western powers from 1945 to 1990.
  • Truman Doctrine

    The Truman Doctrine ended the period of isolationism in America, whereby America wouldn't get involved in international relations. The Truman Doctrine successfully convinced many that the United States was locked in a life-or-death struggle with the Soviet Union.
  • Marshall Plan

    The U.S. feared of unemployment and poverty in eastern and western Europe after WWII. So, secretary of state, George C. Marshall, came up with the Marshall Plan to help on April 3, 1948. The plan was so successful that president Truman extended the Marshall Plan to less-developed countries through the world.
  • Berlin Blockade

    In 1948 the Soviet Union made an attempt to limit the power of France, Great Britain, and the U.S. by putting a blockade and restricting any travel from or to Berlin. In response to this the Berlin airlift began, westerners made 272000 flights into Berlin and delivered thousands of supplies every day.
  • NATO

    Created in 1949, it was the first peace-time military alliance the U.S. entered. Provided collective security from the threat of the Soviet Union, as well as Communism. Originally included: Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxemburg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, United Kingdom, and the United States. Still exists to this day.
  • Rosenberg Trial

    The trial of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg was a couple accused of selling nuclear secrets to the Russians. Rosenberg asked David Greenglass, his brother in law, to pass highly confidential instructions on making atomic weapons to the Soviet Union.
  • Korean War

    North Korea was a communist country ruled by Kim II Sung with China and the Soviet Union on their side. South Korea was a non-communist country with the United Nations on their side lead by General MacArthur. America and South Korea feared the spread of communism and the strong forces North Korea had to fight a war. North Korea wanted to take over South Korea and turn it into a communist country. The Korean War started when North Korea crossed the 38th parallel invading South Korea.
  • Castro's Reign

    In 1953 Fidel Castro hoped to take over Cuba. He failed his first attempt with only 120 men. He was jailed for 2 years but came back stronger with his group formed in Mexico on July 26 a guerrilla group with Che Guevara. they fought 1956- 1959 Batista’s military until until Batista admitted defeat and fled Cuba. Fidel successfully took over Cuba.
  • Hydrogen Bomb

    After the Soviets successfully detonated their first atomic bomb Harry Truman came up with an idea for a “super bomb”. The first hydrogen bomb was launched by the U.S. into the Pacific Marshall Islands completely vaporizing everything.
  • Suez Crisis

    Israel went to war against the Soviet Union and striked on Egypt. Joined by the French and British, they were pushing forward strong. But the Soviet Union threatened to “rain down” hydrogen bombs. The U.S. stepped in and threatened all 3 nations and it worked because the french and british.
  • U2 Plane

    The U-2 plane was a U.S. secret plane that was sent over the Soviet Union to spy on them. The plane was shot down and the pilot, Francis Powers, was captured but later released in 1962 in trade for a Soviet spy. This was the beginning of the central intelligence agency (CIA). United States, the Soviet Union, Great Britain, and France gathered in Paris on May 16. The summit was a disaster and so was the spy plane in Eisenhower’s term.
