38th Parallel
Shorly after WW2 ended, Korea became a divided nation. The North of the 38th parallel surrendered to Soviet Union as communists, while the South surrendered to the United States and its allies as capitalists. -
North invades South Korea
The USSR believed that the US wouldn't defend South Korea as they were already withdrawing their troops, therefore North Korean forces cross the 38th Parallel on a surprise attack on the South. -
UN intervention on the Korean War
The US drove the United Nations to force the North Koreans out of the South. Russians could not veto this plan as they were not attending the UN's meetings. -
UN regains control over South Korea
South Korea along with their allies planned a surprise attack on the North. This caused most North Koreans to surrender and therefore the UN forces getting North Korean forces out of the South. (US soldiers mostly in the UN troops) -
Armistice Ends Korean War
Finally after three years of war, North and South Korea along with the US, and the People’s Republic of China, agree to an armistice (cease-fire agreement), therefore ending the war. -
17th Parallel
In Geneva, Switzerland a Peace Conference takes place in order to discuss the division of Vietnam at 17 north latitude. To the North of the 17th Parallel a Communist is set up, while on the South a Capitalist government is set up. -
US involvement in Vietnam War
US asks authorization from Congress in order to get more soldiers into South Vietnam. -
Vietnamization
President Nixon came up with a strategy to consequently end with the US involvement in the Vietnam War and replace it with South Vietnamese forces. This was because the Vietnam War was not a popular war amongst the Americans. -
Paris Peace Accords
In 1973 the Paris Peace Accords established peace in Vietnam and therefore ending war between the North and the South of Vietnam. end the war. -
Normalization of Diplomatic Relations
U.S. President Bill Clinton announced a formal normalization of diplomatic relations between the US and Vietnam. (Fun fact, this year 2015 this normalization celebrated 20 years of relations)
