After theSoviets invade Afghanistan it became a violent country, Baba and Amir move to the United States to escape the chaos. Baba is sacrificing his power for the love of his son. In America they have low socioeconomic status.

Amir meets Soraya whom he instantly falls in love with. After Soraya comforts Baba during his sickness they decide to have a wedding during his final days.

After a succesful life, Baba's time comes and he accepts it. The cancer gets to a point where it is so bad he cannot preform daily activities. He dies a happy man watching Amir and his wife.

Baba is feeling under the weather so after some hard convincing vists the doctor to take part in some tests where the results are devastating. Baba is diagnosed with cancer and has short time left to live.

After Baba's death Amir finds his manliness when he has to learn to make decisions for himself and his wife. Without Baba the expectations he had to once live up to died along with Baba. This helps him develop his own personality and find his place in the world.

Amir is living in America and he recieves a phone call from his old friend Rahim Khan who lives in Afghanistan. He tells Amir that he has a chance to "make things better again"

Rahim Khan asks Amir to go to Afghanistan and retrive Hassan's son Sohrab for him. When Amir refuses Rahim uses the only weapon he has left: the secret that Baba is Hassan's father. With this Amir agrees to complete his wish.

Amir visits Rahim in Pakistan where Rahim tells him about his life with Hassan, Hassan's mother, wife, and child. He lived with them in Baba's house in Afghanistan while Amir was in America.He tells him that Hassan and his Wife were killed by the taliban and Hassan's son is the only survivor who is now stuck in an orphanage in Afghanistan

While he tries to relive the mempries at his childhood home, Amir comes to the realization that Afghanistan is not the way he remembered it to be. It has been destroyed and manipulated by the war. He realizes that he was "always a tourist in Afghanistan" because he enevr got to experience how most people there live.

To his dissapointment, Amir finds the orphanage Sanuhbar used to live at but is told he was taken by a member of the Taliban. He leaves in a rage to find the person who captured Hassan's Son.

Amir tracks down the member of the Talibn who took Sohrab who ends up being Asseff who has been violating the orphanage children. They fight to the death but Sohrab interferes with his slingshot, saving Amir's live. The two escape together and leave.
