One year before Hassan was born, Amir's mom, Sofia Akrami, died while giving birth to Amir
In the beginning of the book, Amir explains that Hassan was born"just one year after my mother died giving birth to me" (6). When Amir says this you can scene that Amir is upset about his mother and feel sorry for her because he feels like it was his fault for her death. -
Hassan is born!
Hassan is born in the winter of 1964 (one year after Amir). Hassan and his dad Ali lived in a mud shack at "the south end of the garden..."(6) The "servants" home was very small and not well made. This shows that Hassan and his dad are in a very low social class compared to Amir and Baba who live in a beautiful mansion. -
Hassan gets a surgery
Hassan has a cleft lip and he is a Hazara so he gets made fun of by many people. To fix this, he gets surgery so that people will not make fun of him anymore. This also caused Hassan's mom to leave their family. -
The Kite Race
Amir and Hassan enter into a kite race. Amir really wants to win the race so that he will be able to make baba proud of him. When the kite flies off, Hassan goes to get it because he has a telent of finding the kites after they have flown off. On his way to get the kite =, Hassan is followed by Assef and his friends. Assef then rapes Hassan and when Amir gets there he does nothing to stop Assef. -
After the rape
Following the rape, Amir feels like Hassan saw him watching and not doing anything to help him. Now Amir feels very upset and has some regret and his morals along with his consciences are both bothering him. he tries to make himself believe that he did the right thing by telling himself "he was just a Hazara, was he?" (77) Amir says this but still questions himself. To make himself believe this, Amir starts to treat Hassan like a servant rather than a friend. -
Amir turns 13
When Amir turns 13, Baba has a huge party for Amir. During his party, Amir sees something that he says he will never forget. He says that he saw "Hassan serving drinks to Assef and Wali from a silver platter"(100). Ever scene the rape, Amir feels very worried for Hassan every time Assef is close to him. -
The Soviet Union Invades
When the Soviet Union invades it becomes a very big war. -
Soviet Union makes it's way to Kabul
The troops came to Babrak Karmal in Kabul and stayed there for nine tears. -
The trip to America
On the way form Afghanistan to America, Amir and Baba have to go to Jalalabad Peshawar and then to Pakistan. When the get to Jalalabad Peshawar, the car that they were going to take to Pakistan is broken and Baba gets very upset. Until the car gets fixed, Amir, Baba and the other refugees his in a basement. -
Amir meets Soraya
While at the flee market, Amir meets a beautiful girl names Soraya. He really likes her and the soon start to date. Amir called her his "swap meet princess"(144). -
Baba gets sick
Baba gets lung cancer and becomes very ill -
Amir and Baba go to the flee market
Baba likes to go to the flee market because it makes him feel like he is at home. -
Amir and Soraya get married
Amir wanted to marry Soraya so he asks Baba to talk to her dad if they could marry. Baba asks "General Taheri for his daughters hand" -
Amir publishes his very first book
Amir published a book with is very surprising because in the Afghan culture men do not usually write books. This is very important because now that he is in America, Amir can be himself and be proud of what he has done. -
Amir and Soraya can not have a baby
Soraya can not have a baby. This makes Amir and Soraya very upset because they were really wanting to start a family together. They wanted to adopt a child but Soraya's dad says he does not approve because the child will not have their family blood. -
The Soviet Union leaves Afghanistan
The last Soviet Union troops leave Afghanistan. -
Amir finds out that Hassan is his half brother
Amir finds out that Baba is also Hassan's dad so Amir and Hassan are half brothers. Raheim Khan tells Amir about this. -
Amir goes back to Afghanistan
Raheim khan called Amir and asked him to come back to Kabul. He tells Amir that there is a chance for him to be good again -
Amir finds Sorab who is Hassan's son
Amir finds out that Hassan had died form the Taliban and now his son is in an orphanage. Amir goes to find Hassan's son -
Amir tries to bring Sohrab back to America
Amir tries to bring Sohrab back to America with him but the government wont allow him to. Amir tries to do this because he is trying to atone to Hassan for what he did to him when thy were kids. -
Sohrab tries to kill himslef
Sohrab can not be adopted by Amir so he will have to go back to the orphanage. He does not want to and he wants his life to go back to normal so he tries to kill himself -
Sohrab can finally come to America
Sohrab is allowed too come to America and when he gets ther he smiled. This is very important because Amir has never seen him smile and it means he is finally happy.
