Baba's orphanage
Baba had spent a lot of money and dedication into building his own orphanage in Afghanistan. Rahim Khan tells Amir, "He told me Baba had drawn the blueprints himself despite the fact that he'd had no architectural experience at all." (13) This shows Baba was a very independent and courageous man, and this is why Amir looked up to him so much. -

Khan takes over president from the last Mohammed Zahir Shah who falls along with the democratic part of the country, and instead the republican rises -
Hassan defends Amir from Assef
The night of the shooting, Afghan had changed forever. Amir and Hassan were told it was nothing but duck hunting however it turned out a bloodbath occurred and a new king. Assef confronting Amir and Hassan the next day and Hassan using his slingshot as a weapon. Assef tells Amir "'Your Hazara made a big mistake today, Amir,'" (43) This just made Assef hate the two even more and because of this action, Assef is foreshadowed to be up to no good in the future. -
Amir breaks his relationship with Hassan
Amir watches Hassan get raped by Assef. This played a big part in both of their lives, and because of this Hassan parted ways with Amir. "I had one last chance to make a decision. One final opportunity to decide who I was going to be. I could step into that alley, times in the past--- and accept whatever would happen to me." (77) This shows Amir even knew that he was going to have to face the punishment in either choice, and he knew this messed up their relationship. Yet he choose to not help. -
Khan Killed, Nur Mohammad Taraki rises

Amir and Baba leave Afganistan
Amir takes a bus leaving Kabul, to go to America. He starts to think to himself while on the way out of Kabul “Standing on the shoulder of the road, I thought of the way we left the house where I love my entire life as if we were going out for a bite”(112)
This shows Amir really cares about his hometown and he misses it, leaving is a big deal for him and he can’t fully recognize he’s leaving. -
Graduation in High School
Amir graduates high school and this meant a lot for him. Once graduated, Amir says "In a way, this was his day more than mine." To Amir, Baba's happiness and approval means the world to him, and he was glad that Baba found such a significance in his son growing and his accomplishments. -
Amir meets Soraya
Amir finds Soraya in the market and falls in love with her. "My heart stuttered at the thought of her. Soraya Taheri. My swap meet princess" (142) From this you can see Amir considers Soraya a big part of his new life in America. This is important because it shows Amir was able to grow while in America, and finding Soraya found a piece of himself. -
Rahim Khan visors Hassan and Farzana
Rahim goes to find Hassan. Once there he sees the family Hassan has developed and how happy they all are. He tells this to Amir -

Baba’s death
Baba dies of cancer and at his funeral Amir thinks "Baba couldn't show me the way anymore; I'd have to find it on my own." (174) Baba had let Amir so far in his life through the opportunities of America. Amir couldn't rely on Baba anymore to grow, now Amir must find what is right on his own which shows he has a long way to go. -
Peace between countries
US, Pakistan, Afghan, and Soviet Union signed a piece and dispatched 100,000 soviet troops. -
Hassan and his family are killed
Rahim and Amir are now back in the Middle East, Rahim has to tell Amir the story of Hassan's death before he was even able to atone. Rahim Khan said "'Hassan protested again. So they took him to the street--' 'No,' I breathed" (219) Once the news was out, Amir was in total shock. This was his last chance to be good again. Amir wanted to make up for his past. But now the opportunity of him making up to Hassan seemed impossible. -

Amir leaves to Afghan
Amir receives a call from Rahim Khan. Amir realizes from Rahim's comment had significance, he says "Said it in passing, almost as an afterthought. A way to be good again."(192) This means Amir deeply wants to return back to the problem he caused and fix everything, his old life and choices made in Afghan are important to him. Atoning to Hassan is his next step. -
Amir finds Sohrab with Assef
Amir find Sohrab but he has to battle Assef to death, Amir says "but I felt healed. Healed at last. I laughed" (289) Amir shows a calming in this act of standing up to Assef after all these years. Sohrab is like Hassan, and Amir feels helpful by saving Sohrab from the slavery. -
Amir wins the kite race
Amir purchases a yellow kite to bring back the past of Hassan's favorite activity with him. "'For you a thousand times over,' I heard myself say" (371) Amir uses this quote which originally came from Hassan way back twenty years ago. The true meaning of this quote was the undying loyalty that Hassan gave to Amir even without knowing Amir was his actual brother. But even now step brother Hassan still continues to live on in Amir. Hassan is important to Amir.
