In the Kite Runner, Baba's hat falls off at his speech. "the wind knocked his hat off and everyone laughed. He motioned to me to hold his hat for him and I was glad to, because then everyone would see that he was my father." (Houssini 14) When Amir says this, it shows that he is proud of Baba, and wants people to know that he is Baba's son. This event shows Baba's and Amir's relationship start to develop.
-
In the book Kite Runner, Amir hands Baba a story he wrote, but, instead of reading it, Baba leaves the room. After this happens, Amir lays on his bed and says "I wished I could open my veins and drain his cursed blood from my body." (Houssini 32) When Amir says this, he is showing us how much it hurt him that Baba did not want to read a story he had written.
-
When Amir wins the kite flying contest, he and Hassan bond because Amir sees them as a team, not just a seperate kite flyer and kite runner. Hassan says "You won, Amir Agha! You won!""We won! We won!"(Houssini 66) When Amir says "We won", he is showing Hassan that he acknowledges he played a role in winning the contest.
-
When Hassan is going to get raped by Assef, he "didn't struggle" (Housssini 75). When Hassan gets raped to give the kite to Amir, he shows him more loyalty than he ever could. Even though Hassan sarifices himself for Amir, Amir doesn't even call for help when he could have saved Hassan.
-
When Amir is challenged by Ali about Hassan's health, he doesn't tell the truth, but instead says Hassan is "Maybe just sick. People get sick all the time, Ali." (Houssini 81). By saying this. Amir betrays his best friend whom would never betray him. Even though Amir could have told the truth to save Hassan, he lied to save himself.
-
When Hassan and Ali leave, Amir's life changes for the worse. Even though Amir was sorry, he would have never felt the same if Hassan had gotten mad at him, rightfully. But, because Hassan never got mad at Amir, Amir never felt life he had atoned for what he had done to Hassan. Amir says "I was sorry, but I didn't cry and I didn't chase the car." (Houssini 109)
-
Amir and Baba leave Afghanistan because of all the war which was happening. Amir and Baba are riding in an old Russian Army truck, and Amir is getting very car sick. Since Amir and Baba are leaving behind their whole lives, Amir shows his sadness for this by saying "Standing on the shoulder of the road, I thought of the way we'd left the house where I'd lived my entire life, as if we were going out for a bite." (Houssini 112)
-
"A slim-hipped beauty with velvety coal black hair, an open thermos and styrofoam cup in her hand." (Houssini 140) When Amir describes her like this, we know he is attracted to her, and forshadow a future relationship. Amir further describes her and says how they immediately held eye contact. Also, we can forshadow Soraya and Amir talking much more, because they are always at the flea markets at the same time.
-
After Amir and Soraya talk for a while, Amir tells Baba of his his feelings for her, and Baba arranges a wedding. "I remember sitting on the sofa, set on the stage lke a throne, Soraya's hand in mine, as three hundred or so faces looked on." (Houssini 171). When Amir says this, he is shwoing his proudness of marrying Soraya, especially because Soraya came from a very honorable familly.
-
When Baba dies, Amir realizes how much of Baba he was. he said he had been "Defined by Baba and the marks he had left on people's lives."(Houssini 174) Now that Baba had gone, it was up to Amir to make hinself his own person, and not just "Baba's Son."
-
When Amir sees Rahim Khan again, he shows Amir Hassan and him family, and tells him that Hassan had been killed along with his wife, by Taliban soldiers. Amir discovers who Hassan's son, sohrab was, and said to Rahim "I would have noticed him if I had bumped into him on the street." (Houssini 215)
-
After Amir talks with Rahim Khan, Rahim tells him "I want you to go to Kabul. I want you to bring Sohrab here." (Houssini 220) After Rahim says this, Amir knows he has to go to Kabul to save Sohrab, and atone for letting Hassan get raped,
-
When Amir goes to Kabul to look for Sohrab, he does not find him at any of the orphanages nearby. Instead, he finds out that Assef has taken Sohrab as a sex slave. As Amir meets with Assef, Assef "kissed the side of Sohrab's neck. The boy flinched a little." (Houssini 282) After Amir sees this going on, he agrees to fight Assef to free Sohrab.
-
After Amir goes to meet Assef, they agree that whoever wins in a fight gets to keep Sohrab and lesve. After Amir agrees to this, he and Assef start fighting. Assef immediately starts dominating him, but Amir is beat to the point where he starts laughing. Amir says "My body was broken-just how badly I wouldn't find out until later-but I felt healed. Healed at last." (Houssini 289)
-
After Sohrab shoots a brass ball into Assef's eye, setting him and Amir free, Amir takes Sohrab to America. Amir and Sohrab go through their hardships of getting used to their new lives, but eventually Amir feels he has atoned for what he had caused to happen to Sohrab. He said "For you a thousand times over" and then ran a kite he and Sohrab had cut. (Houssini 371)
