  • Baba is born

    The book states that, "In 1933, the year Baba was born..." (Hosseini 24). This quote shows that Baba was born in 1933. Also this quote is important because Baba is an important character in the book because he is really powerful and influential in the book.
  • Amir is born

    In 1964 Hassan is born, "In that little shack, that Hassan was born in the winter of 1964, just one year after my mother died giving birth to me" (Steinbeck 6). This quote shows how Amir was born in 1963 because Hassan was born a year after him in 1964. Also this quote shows an event that is important in the plot because Amir's mom died giving birth to Amir and that is why she is not in the story.
  • Hassan is born

    During a cold day, "Hassan's mother, Sanaubar, gave birth to him one cold winter day in 1964" (Hosseini 6). This quote shows that Hassan was born 1964. Hassan's birth is important because he and Amir will bond together and be friends even if Hassan is his servant. Also this character is significant in the story because he will make Amir suffer in the story.
  • Baba start to make an orphanage

    In the late 1960's, "when [Amir] was five or six, Baba decided to build an orphanage" (Hosseini 13). This quote demonstrates how Baba started to build an orphanage. Baba's decision to build an orphanage displays his power and wealth because only a person that had money would be able to build an orphanage. Also it displays his personality and how he likes to help others
  • Baba's Orphanage is complete

    It took Baba, "Three years to build an orphanage" (Hosseini 13). This quote shows that Baba finished the orphanage that he started building after three years. Also Baba's power and kindness is shown because he completed what he started to help others and it shows that he had the wealth and power to be able to actually finish the orphanage.
  • The Soviet Union invades Afghanistan for the first time

    In 1973, "Afghanistan changed forever" and, "Something roared like thunder. The earth shook a little and we heard the rat-a-tat-tat of gunfire..." (Hosseini 14-15). This shows that the Soviets invaded Afghanistan for the first time in the book and that is significant in the story because this event laid the foundation for worse events to come.
  • Hassan is raped by Assef

    Amir cowardly watches Hassan get raped and, "'Ran because [Amir] was a coward.I was afraid of of Assef and what he would do to me...'" but, "'[Amir] watched Hassan get raped...'" (Hosseini 77 and 86). This shows that Hassan was raped by Assef and that Amir watched, but ran way cowardly. Amir demonstrates that he is a coward because he didn't help Hassan, but he also shows that he is a selfish person because he only thought about what Assef could do to him instead of caring for Hassan.
  • President Khan introduces a new constitution

    In 1975 President Khan the former president of Afghanistan introduces a new constitution that gives women rights to work and he takes people that oppose him out of the government. In 1975, "Khan proposes a new constitution that grants women rights and works to modernize the largely communist state."

  • Ali and Hassan leave from Baba's house

    Ali told Baba that, "'We are leaving, Agha sahib, Ali said. What ? Baba said, the color draining from his face. We can't live here anymore, Ali said'" (Hossini 106). This shows that Ali and Hassan had to leave from Baba's house voluntarily. This event makes Amir and Baba really sad and because of this Amir will want to atone for Hassan later in the story.
  • Amir wins the Kite fighting Competition

    After the tournamnet people were secreaming ,"You won, Amir
    agha! You won!" (Hosseini 66). This shows that Amir won the competition and this event is significant because, because of this Hassan is raped and Amir's relationship between Hassan and Amir was destroyed.

In 1978 the president,"Khan is killed in a communist coup. Nur Mohammad Taraki, one of the founding members of the Afghan Communist Party, takes control of the country as president..."

  • Soviet Union invades Afghanistan

    In 1979 the, "Soviet Union invades Afghanistan". In 1970 the soviets invaded Afghanistan and started a war that lasted from December 25, 1979 to February 5, 1989.

  • Baba and Amir leave Afghanistan and go to The United States

    Amir's, "innards had been roiling since we'd left Kabul just after two in the morning" (Hosseini 110). Baba and Amir go to America and,
    "Just one month after we arrived in the U.S., Baba found a job off Washington Boulevard as an assistant at a gas station owned by an Afghan acquaintance" (Hosseini 130). This shows that Amir and Baba have left Afghanistan to America and they are just adjusting. After some time in America Amir meets his wife and Amir gets more possibilities in America.
  • Afghans flee from the war to Pakistan

  • U.S. supplies mujahideen with missiles to shoot down Soviet helicopters

    In 1986, "US begins supplying mujaheddin with Stinger missiles, enabling them to shoot down Soviet helicopter gunships".   • Amir gets married

    For Amir's wedding with Soraya, "Baba spent $35,000, nearly the balance of his life savings, on the awroussi, the wedding ceremony..." (Hosseini 169). This shows that Amir gets married, but it also shows how Baba is being kind and supportive of Amir and not like he used to be back in Afghanistan.
  • Baba is diagnosed with cancer

    Baba's cancer was called, "Oat Cell Carcinoma.Advanced. Inoperable..." (Hosseini 156). This shows that Baba was diagnosed with cancer and that he was going to die since it was advanced and inoperable. This event is significant because Baba dies because of this and Amir finds out about many secrets Baba has been hiding from him.
  • Baba Dies

    After, "Baba's death, Soraya and I moved into a one-bedroom apartment in Fremont, just a few blocks away from the general and Khala Jamila's house" (Hosseini 180). This once again swhows that Amir was married to Soraya and that Baba died, but thuis event is significant because after Baba's death Amir finds out a lot of things like that Hassan is actually Baba's son and that Hassan was Amir's half brother.
  • Soviets and Afghanistan sign peace treaty

    In 1988 Soviets start back down and, " Afghanistan, USSR, the US and Pakistan sign peace accords and Soviet Union begins pulling out troops". In 1988 the Soviets sign a treaty that brings peace with Afghanistan and the U.S..

  • Taliban take over Kabul

    In 1996, " Taliban seize control of Kabul and introduce hard-line version of Islam, banning women from work, and introducing Islamic punishments, which include stoning to death and amputations". In 1996 a force of violence takes over known as the Taliban and they say to enforce Islamic ruling, but they instead make people obey rules they believe are beneficial to them and they punish people who don't follow their rules.

  • Amir is called by Rahim Khan to go to Afghanistan (Tells him truth about Baba and tells him to go get Sohrab in Pakistan)

    In 1975, "Rahim Khan called from Pakistan. He asked me to come see him" (Hosseini 1). This quote shows that Rahim Khan wanted Amir to go to Afghanistan and that was probably because he wanted to let the truth out and he did when Amir arrived at his house ( Rahim Khan told him that Baba was actually Hassan's father and that Amir was his half brother and he also told him that Hassan had left a son)
  • Amir takes Sohrab to America (Atonement in the story)

    Amor tells Sohrab that, "We won't have to put you in the orphanage, Sohrab. We're going to America, you and I. Did you hear me? We're going to America!" (Hosseini 343). This shows that Amir wanted to take Sohrab to America and this is a really significant event because Amir finally atoned for his past sins with Hassan.
  • Planes crash twin towers in New York

    on September 11, 2001 planes crash into twin towers in New York and Osama Bin laden in Afghanistan is believed to have caused this.   • President Hamid Karzai is elected president

  • The leader of Al-Qaida Osama Bin Laden is killed

    In 2011 U.S. forces go to Afghanistan and,"overtake a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, and kill al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden". In 2011 Osama Bin Laden was killed by United States forces.
