Hassan is raped and Amir wins the kite tournament.
Amir describes that he "became what (he) is today at the age of twelve, on a frigid overcast day in the winter of 1975."(1) two events occured that day including Amirs victory in the kite tournament, and Assef raping Hasan. Hassans rape is a memory that Amir cannot remove from his mind and is something that will haunt him until he can atone for not doing anything to stop it. -

Amir turns 13.
Amir "turned thirteen that summer of 1976, Afganistans's next to last summer of peace and anonymity." (93) -
Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan.
In December the "first Soviet troops parachuted into Kabul" to assist the new president Babrak Karmal who gained power in a coup in Communist leadership. -
Amir and Baba leave Kabul.
Amir and Baba leave their home in Kabul to find a safer life in The United States. Amir's "innards had been roiling since (They had) left Kabul just after two in the morning," (110) Amir had left early in order to make sure they left Kabul before anything bad happened. Amir is uncertain of what will happen and is scared showing why his stomach hurts. -
Amir graduates highschool.
Amir "graduated high school at the age of twenty."(131) Amir has been through a lot in his life and he managed to finish high school. Finishing high school is something Amir has done to find Baba's approval. -
Amir meets Soraya and General Taheri.
When Amir first saw Soraya he described her as "a slim hipped beauty with velvety coal black hair... (Amir's) heart quickened,"(140) Soraya Amir met the woman who would eventually become his wife. The scene shows the rush Amir felt when he saw her for the first time. -
Amir and Soraya Marry.
Amir and Soraya had a large cermony for their wedding. That night, Amir "Whispered to her for the first time that (He) loved her."(171) Amir had never been romanticaly involved with a woman. He begins to wonder if he is the only one in his family who has ever loved. -
Baba dies.
After a battle with cancer. Baba passes away one month after Amir's wedding. After Amir helped Baba into bed and closed his bedroom door, "Baba never woke up."(173) Baba was the last family member Amir knew he had alive and now he left him. Amir must learn to become more independent without Baba in his new family. -
Rahim Khan finds Hassan in Hazarajat.
Rahim Khan says he "went to Hazarajat to find Hassan in 1986." (203) Rahim Khan was lonely as Baba was dead and Amir lived in America. He found that Hassan was the only person he knew left in Afganistan. -
Amir Publishes his first book.
Amir finished his first novel "In the summer of 1988... a father-son story set in Kabul."(182) Amir is living up to Rahim Khan's prophecy of Amir becoming a great writer. Amir writes this father-son story based on the relationship he had with his father. -
Withdrawl of Soviet Troops.
After the UN peace talks, The Soviet Troops "left Afganistan in February 1989." Leaving behind a devestated country. -
Sohrab is born
Rahim Khan tells Hassan that "Sanaubar who delivered Hassan's son the winter of 1990."(211). Sanaubar becomes a key part of Amir's business in Afganistan. When Sanaubar becomes the only part of Hassan that is left, Amir needs to do what he can to protect him and give back to Hassan. -
Division of Power.
The Soviet Union left the country a mess of disorder. the power of the country "was anarchically divided by competing warlords and individual fiefdoms." -
Taliban takes control of Afghanistan.
Amir is told how Afganis "all celebrated in 1996 when the Taliban rolled in and put an end to the daily fighting."(213) The victory of the Taliban briefly gave the Afgani's hope. Hassan realized the Taliban ruled Afganistan meant the mass murder of the Hazaras. -

Amir returns to Afghanistan.
After Amir recieves the call from Rahim Khan requesting his help, Amir told Soraya that he "had to go to Pakistan."(191) Pakistan had become a distant memory to Amir in his new life in America. Amir must respond to this call for help as Rahim Khan is one of Amir's last living friends. -
Amir and Sohrab enter the United States
Amir and Sohrab "arrived home on a warm day in August 2001."(357) Sohrab only wants his life to return the way it was in Afganistan however he has to start new in the United States. Amir taking Sohrab to safety in America is one of the ways Amir atones to Hassan for not helping him while in trouble. -
9/11 attacks occur.

Amir runs a kite for Sohrab
Hassan ran kites in for Amir. now that Amir is older and is taking care of Sohrab, they are doing things that Amir and Hassan would do as children. They fought a kite together and when their kite won, Amir asked Sohrab if he wanted him to run it in. When Sohrab said yes, Amir responded "For you, a thousand times over."(371) This is the exact thing Hassan said to Amir as he ran his kite in 1975. Amir is giving back to Hassan by doing this for Sohrab -
