Amir's regret
- Amir competes in the kite-fighting competition, because he likes the sport, but mainly because he wants to get his father's admiration. Hassan promises to run after the last defeated kite. Amir's not so happy birthday

The Truth revealed
- Amir goes to Pakistan, and speaks to Rahim Khan. Amir hopes that coming to Pakistan will give him a chance to redeem himself. Rahim Khan tells Amir that he is dying and tells him that Hassan lived with him in Kabul for a while. Amir learns that Hassan and his wife have been executed by the Taliban. But the most pivotal thing Rahim told him was that Hassan is not only Amir's former servant but also his half brother, the result of Baba’s affair with Sanaubar, Hassan’s mother.

Amir's redemption
- Amir goes to Afghanistan to save/retrieve Hassan's son, and his nephew, Sohrab. At the house, Amir meets Assef, Sohrab is being kept at the home where he is made to dance in women's clothes and Assef was molesting him. Assef agrees to give him to Amir, but only if Amir will let him beat him up. Amir was near death, he is saved when Sohrab uses his slingshot to shoot Assef's left eye, just as his dad was willing to do for Amir.

Distraught young sohrab
- When they get back to the US, Sohrab doesn’t talk because he is extremely hurt emotionally. Amir speaks to Sohrab about Hassan while they go kite flying. Amir shows off some of Hassan’s old tricks, Sohrab is touched and speaks with Amir.
