  • Hassan and Amir Climbed Poplar Trees and Annoyed the Neighbors

    The boys would climb the hill, sit in the tree, and,"[reflect] sunlight into their homes with a shard of mirror," (3). This was when Amir's life was simple and happy. He was careless with his childhood and he hadn't experienced the bad things in his life yet.
  • There is a Bomb Strike

    After,"Something roared like thunder," Ali wrapped his arms around the two boys who are frightened by the shaking. Hassan began to cry, with fear.
  • Baba opened the Orphanage

    When he finished," A lot of people had to stand to watch the opening ceremony," (15). Amir is proud of Baba and himself. He wants people to know that Baba is his father.
  • Amir Flew a Kite with Hassan for the Last Time

    In their last kite tournament when Amir was constantly trying to impress Baba, he says," I saw Hassan run a kite for the last time," (55). After everything that has happened to these two boys, thus is significant because it us a part of Amir's life that will just disappear.

    "Assef knelt behind Hassan... He unzipped his jeans. Dropped his underwear," (Hosseini 75). The German Pashtun boy rapes Hassan in an alley, and Amir sat back and watched it happen without stepping in. It says that Hassan did not even whimper or struggle.

    "Up and down the streets, kite runners were returning triumphantly, their captures flags held high," (63). The two boys win the tournament, and Baba stands to clap for them. This makes Amir happy, because he finally gained Baba's praise.

    "2.8 million people leave Afghanistan to get away form the war, and go to Pakistan. Another 1.8 million people leave to Iran." (PBS)
  • Amir Graduates from Highschool

    He was,"by far the oldest senior," to be graduating(131). Baba disappeared into the crowd with his camera. Baba is so proud of his son and Amir loved the way it felt to be on the "receiving end" of this pride.
  • Soraya Confesses What She Did as a Child

    After telling Amir that when she was young she ran away with another man, Amir says,"I envied her. Her secret was out. Spoken. Dealt with," (165). Soraya couldn't have married Amir without telling him everything about her. This shows how honest and true her character is.
  • Amir marries Soraya

    After Baba has asked General Taheri for his son to be accepted into his family, he says,"I welcome you to my home as a son," (168). Soraya's father agrees to the marriage, and Baba squeezes Amir's hand to show excitement. Baba is proud to see his son growing up.
  • al-Qaida is formed

    "In September, Osama bin Laden and 15 others formed the group called al-Qaida, or “the base”, to continue their jihad, or holy war, against the Soviets and other who they say oppose their goal of a pure nation governed by Islam." (PBS)
  • Baba dies

    "Baba never woke up," (173). Baba dies in his sleep. Soraya and Amir tuck him into bed and he said he wanted no more pain.
  • Taliban is created

    "Newly formed Islamic militia, the Taliban, rises to power on promises of peace. Most Afghans, exhausted by years of drought, famine and war, approve of the Taliban for upholding traditional Islamic values.   • Amir and Farid go back to Baba's Mansion

    Amir," wanted to go in," (263). He wanted to remember all of his past life with Hassan. Amir said it was insane of him to want this, but he did.
  • Amir Fights Assef

    Assef says," 'We have unfinished business, you and I,' ... 'You remember, don't you?' " (286). Assef tells Amir that if he wants his nephew, he has to fight for him. He says they have unfinished business from the past. Amir doesn't want to fight, but he has to, for Hassan.
  • The U.S. Gets Involved

    "By now considered an international terrorist, bin Laden is widely believed to be hiding in Afghanistan, where he is cultivating thousands of followers in terrorist training camps. The United States demands that bin Laden be extradited to stand trial for the embassy bombings. The Taliban decline to extradite him. The United Nations punishes Afghanistan with sanctions restricting trade and economic development."(PBS)
  • Sorab Cuts Himself With a Razor

    After Amir saw Sorab in the bathtub he started screaming, and," was still screaming when the ambulance arrived," (343). When Amir sees what Sorab has done to himself, he feel so guilty because Amir feels it is his duty to keep Hassan's son alive. He can't loose Sorab like he lost Hassan.
  • Amir and Sorab Arrive in San Francisco

    Amir and Sorab,"arrived home about seven months ago, on a warm day in August 2001," (357). The two finally figured out a way to get Sorab into America and out of the orphanage. Amir and Soraya legally adopt Hassan's son, Sorab.
  • 9/11 Terrorist Attack in New York

    "Hijackers commandeer four commercial airplanes and crash them into the World Trade Center Towers in New York, the Pentagon outside Washington, D.C., and a Pennsylvania field, killing thousands. Days later, U.S. officials say bin Laden, the Saudi exile believed to be hiding in Afghanistan, is the prime suspect in the attack." (PBS)
  • Taliban become an insult to Islam

    "Ignoring international protests, the Taliban carry out their threat to destroy Buddhist statues in Bamiyan, Afghanistan, saying they are an [insult] to Islam." (PBS)
  • Amir Flies a Kite with Sorab

    Just like Hassan did for Amir, he asked Sorab if he," wanted me to run the kite for him," (371). Amir, a grown man, ran with all the children, happy as can be. He took the place of Hassan in the kite flying process.
  • Karazi becomes President

    "Presidential elections are held. More than 10.5 million Afghans register to vote and choose among 18 presidential candidates, including interim leader Karzai. Karzai is elected with 55 percent of the vote."(PBS)
