Kite Runner and the History of Afghanistan

  • Kite Fights

    In the beggining of the book, there was a flashback, it talks about how Amir feels like "[he] became what [he] was today at the age of 12, on a fridged overcast day in the winter of 1975." (1) This was when the kite fights started and when Amir became what would practically shape his future.
  • Amir turns 13

    There was a piont of tme when they knew that it would be the last time of peace in Afghanistan, "[Amir] turned 13 that summer of 1976, Afghanistan's last summer of peace and anonymity."(93) This turns out to be the year where Ali and Hassan quit working for Baba and then left the house.
  • Soviet Union Invasion

    On this date the article says that, "The first first Soviet troops parachuted into Kabul on Dec. 27, 1979." (NYT 2) On this day they wanted to assist Babrak Karmal who was the president.
  • Baba and Amir are in California

    Now Baba and Amir live in Fremont, California, they flash back to, "when [they] were still in Kabul, the U.S. announced it would be boycotting the Olympic Games in Moscow."(126) Now that they have been in the U.S. for a while Amir still thinks of Afghanistan often.
  • Soviets in Afghanistan

    The Soviets have invaded Afghanistan and "you counld't trust anyone in Kabul anymore--for a free or under threat, people told on each other."(112) The Soviets have impacted Afghanistan immensely and turned the country around completly. Baba and Amir are runaways, and the people of the counry are loosing trust in each other and have divided into 2 different groups.
  • Baba and Amir with another servent

    This year happpend to be the time where Baba and Amir had escaped out of Kabul to Jalalabad, "In the morning, Jalauddin- our seventh servent in five years- would probably think we'd gone out for a stroll or a drive." (112)
  • Amir Graduates high school

    While all of this is going on in Afghanistan, "that summer in 1983, I graduated high school at the age of 20, by far the oldest senior tossing his mortorboard on the football field that day."(131) Amir's life has changed very much since moving to U.S. this also includes graduating high school.
  • Amir and Soraya

    Amir and Soraya start talking to each other much more frequently, and even now without her father there, and askes her "would you like to hear my stories?'(147) This is the starting of Soraya and Amir's relationship, which eventually ends up with them getting married.
  • Baba gets Cancer

    After Baba arrives from the doctor's office, he finds out that he has "oat cell carcinona" cancer. (156) After his returning, he doesnt' want to tell Amir what he has been diagnosed with until he finally realizes that this is a way to set things straight between him and his son.
  • Amir and Soraya's Marriage

    Leading up to this event, Amir and Soraya have been speaking more often than usual "...[he] wants to ask Gerneral Taheri for his daughter's hand" (161). This is the starting of Amir an Soraya's new life together while Baba is trying to get better with cancer.
  • Soviet Air Force

    Throughout this article, in one part it says, "After 1986, the Soviet Air Force was also rendered largely useless by advanced Stinger antiaircraft missiles supplied by the United States to the rebles." (NYT 2)
  • Baba's Passing

    After Amir and Soraya's wedding, Baba passes away because he refuses to get treatment from the doctor. This leads to another chapter in their lives. "shortly after Baba's death, Soraya and [Amir] move into a one bedroom apartment in Fremont, just a few blocks away from the General and Khala Jamila's house."
  • Amir Completes His First Book

    Six weeks after Amir finishes his book he gets a call from a publisher that is interested in his book "...a man named Martin Greenwalt called from New York and offered to represent [him]." Now that people are interested in Amir's books, he can start with his career in the United States.
  • Soviet troops left

    In the untited nations the soviet there was eventually peace, "...After peace talks moderated by the United Nations, the last Soviet troops left Afghanistan in February 1989..."(NYT 2)
  • Soraya and Amir

    Soraya and Amir have been wanting a baby, but cannot have one and now they think that it is just not "...ment to be."(186) This really takes a turn on their relationship, and they are now not as close as before.
  • Power was Anarchically Divided

    In the summer of 1994 the power was divides as said in the article, "...power was anarchically divided among competing warlords and individual fiefdoms." (NYT 2)
  • Taliban Taking Control

    The Taliban was starting to take control as the article says, "...the Taliban by 1996 had taken control of Afganistan..." (NYC 3) The article also talks about how they strictly inforced the fundamentalist Islamic Law.
  • The United States and Afghanistan

    In the article it talks about this bond between the two places, "The Untited States has been militarily involved in Afghanistan since 2001." (NYT 2)
  • Rahim Khan

    Later on Amir gets a call from Rahim Kahn, who wants Amir to go to Pakisatn to see him because, "[he] is very sick"(191) Amir explains this to his wife and, she is finally okay with it.
  • Attack of the World Trade Center

    As the article points out about this, "After the attack of the World Trade Center in New York on Sept. 11, 2001, president George W. Bush gave the Taliban an ultimatum to hand over Mr. bin Laden." (NYT 3)
  • Amirs shock

    Amir is shocked to find out everything that has happened in his family, now that he knows Hassan was his brother he gets very upset. When he reads a letter from Hassan it states, "Kindness is gone through the land and you cannot ecscape the killings."(216) This is a very important time in Amirs life by helping his now known as brother.
  • The "surge" in Iraq

    In the article it brings out that, "...the archiect of the 2007 "surge" in Iraq, in command of American forces..." (NYT 1)
  • Obama's plan to deploy

    Towards the ending of this article it says, "In a speach delivered Dec. 1, 2009. at West Point, Mr. Obama announced his plan to deploy 30,000 additional troops." (NYT 4)
  • President Obama

    President Obama removed someone in the article that says, "In June 2010, President Obama removed Gen. Mc.Chrystal after contemptuous from the general and his staff..." (NYT 4)
  • Amir visits Rahim Kahn

    While taling to Rahim Kahn he says that he knew that Amir would come sometime again because, "[he had] a dream that some day you will return to Kabul to revisit the land of our childhood."(218) This reminds Amir of Hassan and how he had betrayed him.
