From 1 - 500 CE The first known settlement/kingdom which started the great empire of the khmers was first settled in the lower Mekong River region. The kingdom was known as Funan. It rose just like any other kingdom would but just like any kingdom could, it fell. In 500 CE There was evidence of trade between the people of the Khmer and the indian people. From 550-700 The State of Chenla replaces Funan as the dominent Kingdom of the people. -

From 770 - 834 King Jayavarman II Unified all the smaller states to create one large empire. The capital is in the Angkor region of Cambodia -

In 802 JayavarmanII was enthroned as a devaraja (God - King) From 834 - 1145 The Khmer Empire expanded and Angkor Wat was built. Buddism started to become a major religion. -

From 1177 - 1178 The Cham Kingdom invades much of Khmer Empire's eastern territory. -

1181 - 1219
From 1181 - 1219 Jayavarman VII defeats the Chams and expanded the empire to its furthestextent to incorporate much of present day Laos, Thailand and Burma. -

1243 - 1293
From 1243 - 1298 Rule of Jayavarman VIII. He renounces Buddhism and orders that Buddhist temples and images be destroyed and hinduism become the main religion. -

In the 1300s Buddhism grows important and again becomes the main religion of the Khmer people -

1431 - 1440s
In 1431 The Thai Army attacks Angkor. In 1432 The Khmers abandon Angkor Wat. Over subsequent centuries, the jungle grew around and over Angkor and its location was forgotten In the 1440s The Khmer rulers relocate the capital to Phnom Penh -

In 1593 The Siamese ( Thai /0 King attacks and defeats the Khmer king -
1700s
In the 1700s Vietnamese armies repeatedly attack the Khmer forces in the Mekong River Delta and defeat the Khmer. The approximate modern borders of Cambodia are determined.
