The expansion of the empire under King Jayavarman VII was very costly, too costly. By 1200 CE, these costs were too much for the people and the empire. The result was that the empire went broke and its power started to decline. -

Khmer Empire Loses Territory
After King Jayavarman VII died, the Cham kingdom and the Thais both launched a series of wars against the Khmer Empire. Both succeeded and redeemed back territory from the empire. -

Khmer Defeated
The Khmer was defeated by the Thais and Cambodia became a vassal state of the Thais. The Thais looted everything owned by the empire and brought all the things back to the Thai capital at Ayuthaya -

When King Jayavarman II came to power, he strengthened the power of the Khmer monarchy by declaring his self a devaraja, or god-king. -
