    The expansion of the empire under King Jayavarman VII was very costly, too costly. By 1200 CE, these costs were too much for the people and the empire. The result was that the empire went broke and its power started to decline.

    After King Jayavarman VII died, the Cham kingdom and the Thais both launched a series of wars against the Khmer Empire. Both succeeded and redeemed back territory from the empire.

    Empire Expands

    Jayavarman II was recognised as the founder of the Khmer Empire. He expanded the empire by establishing two new cities, Mount Kulen and Hariharalaya
