  • Election of Abraham Lincoln

    Abraham Lincoln was the republican candidate in the election of 1860 and was elected as President of the United States in November of 1860. Lincoln was strongly opposed to slavery, which is why he was banned on 10 of the Southern states ballots, which lead to the Civil War to end slavery in the South. He was president when the first shots were fired of the war and was assasinated shortly after General Lee surrendered.
  • South Carolina Seceded

    South Carolina was the first of many Southern states to seced from the United States of America. South Carolina set the stage for other states to follow, they seceded in reaction to Lincoln being elected president and wanting to end slavery. This was the start of the Confederate States of America.
  • The Confederate States of America

    The Confederate State of America was offically formed, it included many of the Southern States and more joined later on. These former states believed that slavery was a essential part of their life and the threat of taking it away, amooung other things, lead to the division.When the Confederacy was offically formed it then elected Jefferson Davis as their President.
  • The Battle of Fort Sumter

    This was the start of the Civil War, it was the first battle of a four year war. Fort Sumter was located in the South but was under Union control. Lincoln was planning to send supplies here and Confederate General Beauregard decided to demand Union Major Anderson to surrender, which he did not do, to get the supplies. After Anderson refused to surrender, Confederate soliders attacked. Congress declared war on the Confederate States of America the next day.
  • The Battle of Red Bull

    The battle of Bull Run was the first major battle of the war, it started when Union forces attacked Confederate forces in Manassas Virginia. Union forces planned to defeat the Confederate forces, which would open the way to Richmond, where the Confederate capital was located, and end the war quickly. The Union's plan failed due to an overly complicated plan of attack and the Confederacy with help from reinforcments lead to a Confederate victory.
  • The Battle of Fort Donelson

    The battle of Fort Donelson took place at Fort Donelson, Tennessee. This was a Union victory, which was lead by Ulyssis S. Grant and this battle lead him to be well known. He was promoted to Major general after this battle.
  • The Battle of Monitor and Merrimark

    This was the first naval battle to include iron clade ships. The Merrimark, was the Confederate ship, and the Monitor, was the Union ship, both of which had a layer of sheet metal covering the wooden outside of their ships to increase protection. The use of iron clade ships propels the US to becoming a Naval power, which it is still considered today.
  • The Battle of Antietam

    Union General Hooker and Confederate General Lee went back and forth with attacks and counter attacks. The Union had greater numbers but the Confederates managed to hold their ground. Lee had his entire force fighting during this battle and was determined to keep going even though many were injured or killed. While the confederate army was filled with the injured McClellan did not keep fighting vigorously and claimed this battle a Union victory.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Lincoln passed the Emancipation Proclamation to end slavery in the Confederate States of America. He only ended slavery in the Confederacy because the brder states still had slaves and they had vital territory that was needed for the war. This ultimately had no effect and was more for show because the Confederacy was a seperate country and did not follow the laws of the Union.
  • The battle of Fredericksburg

    It was one of the largest battles, 200,000 soldiers, of the Civil war and also one of the deadliest. This battle took place in the streets of the city of Fredericksburg, making this the first battle of the Civil war to take place in a city. Burnside, Union general, planned to attack with lots of men to crush the confederates but Lee had a strong counter attack which held off Burnside but did not defeat them; only lead to thousands of soldiers killed or wounded. The Confederacy won this battle.

  • The Battle of Vicksburg

    May 18- July 4, 1863. Located in Vicksburg, Mississippi. General Grant wanted to take control of the town that was located right along the Mississippi River from the Confederates who created a fortress there. Due to the number of lives lost already Grant decided to siege the fortress to prevent more deaths. The siege went on for 47 days before the Confederate force surrendered on July 4, 1863 which gave the Mississippi River to the Union.
  • The Battle of Gettysburg

    General Lee lead his forces into Gettysburg on July 1, 1864 when trying to reach Pennsylvania to collect supplies and treated Northern cities in hopes of increasing the peace movement that was in North. The battle lasted three days and on the final day the Confederate forces tried a heavy artillery attack known as Pickett's Charge but the Union forces held strong a fired back causing many casualties for the Confederates. This was a victory for the Union and a turning point in the war.
  • The Battle of Atlanta

    Union General Sherman attacked Confederate forces, which was headed by General Hood.This was one of the many battles that took place in and near Atlanta as Sherman wanted to take control of the supplies and railroads in Atlanta. On September 2, 1864 Atlanta fell to Sherman, this marked the beginning of Shermans distructive march west to meet up with General Grants forces and surround the Confederate forces.
  • The Surrender at Appomatox Courthouse

    General Lee surrendered his army, the amry of Northern Virginia, at the Appomatox Courthouse. This was not the end of the civil war but it was the start of all the other Confederate armies surrendering. Lee's surrender marked the beginning of the end of the war and is often thought to be the end of the Civil War.
  • Assassination of Lincoln

    President Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth in Fords Theater three days after the end of the war. The war had not offically ended but it was clear that the Union was going to win after Lee's surrender at Appomatox Courthouse. This was a major event because it showed how unhappy many people were with the ending of slavery and it also lead to Johnson becoming President.
  • Andrew Johnson becoming President

    After the assassination of President Lincoln the vise President, Andrew Johnson, took over. Johnson had very different plans for reconstruction than Lincoln had. He was also not very wellliked because he was a democrate that ran on the republican ballot and he was a southerner who believed in unification, this cause many problems and changed how history would have been if Lincoln had not been assassinated.
  • The Battle of Palmito Ranch

    Location- Texas. The battle of Palmito Ranch was the last battle of the Civil War, The Union army headed by Theodore H. Barrett, attacked the Confederate fortess on May 12, this battle was the last to be fought in the Civil War.
  • End of the Civil War

    This was the offical end to the Civil war, President Johnson on August 20 declared that the war was over. The war for many people is considered to have ended in 1865 with Lee's surrender at Appomatox Courthouse. This marks the end of slavery in the United States and the beginning of reconstruction, which lasts tell 1877.
  • Attempted Impeachment of Johnson

    On Feb 4, Johnson was impeached in the House of Representatives but was not impeached from office because he was saved by one vote in the Senate. This is significant because if he was impeached, many presidents would have been impeached using the same reason, high crimes and misdemenors, even thought he was not he just did not follow the publics view point. Johnson was not a well liked President which is why he was the first President to be impeached.
  • Election of Ulysses S. Grant

    Ulysses S. Grant was elected president in the 1868 election mainly because of the contributions he had during the war. He was a war hero for leading the Union to victory and helping end slavery in the United States.
