Adolf Hitler's first foreign policy was to sign a pact with Poland in January 1934. He wanted to form this pact so he could eliminate the possibility of a Polish-French military alliance against Germany. They didn't agree, and so Germany made a pact with the Soviet Union. Then, when Germany invaded Poland, they wouldn't have to worry about Soviet intervention. On September 1, 1939, Germany invaded Poland. The Polish army was defeated within weeks of the invasion.

Germany brought war to Western Europe on May 10, 1940, with the main goal of conquering France. German bombers hit air bases in France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands, destroying many planes. German tanks broke through the main fronts on June 12.
