  • Germany invades Poland

    The Polish army was defeated within weeks of the invasion. German units, with more then 2,000 tanks and over 1,000 planes, broke through Polish defenses along the border and advanced on Warsaw.
  • Britain & France declare war on Germany

    Britain and France, standing by their guarantee of Poland's border, had declared war on Germany on September 3, 1939. The Soviet Union invaded eastern Poland on September 17, 1939. The demarcation line for the partition of German- and Soviet-occupied Poland was along the Bug River.
  • Churchill becomes Prime Minister of Britain

    Chamberlain formally lost the confidence of the House of Commons as he showed himself ill-equipped for saving Europ from Nazi conquest. Churchill was appointed British prime minister. Churchill promised his country and the world that British people would "never surrender." They never did.

    Bombing of Pearl Harbor
    On December 7, 1941, hundreds of Japanese fighter planes attacked the American naval base at Pearl Harbor near Honolulu, Hawaii. The barrage lasted just two hours, but it was devastating: The Japanese managed to destroy nearly 20 American naval vessels, including eight enormous battleships, and almost 200 airplanes. More than 2,000 Americans soldiers and sailors died in the attack, and another 1,000 were wounded.
