  • US Supreme Court

    In 1944, the US Supreme Court ruled all-white primaries were illegal & violated the 15th amendment. This impacted the early Civil Rights movement by guaranteeing the rights of African Americans as citizens.
  • Jackie Robinson

    Jackie Robinson became the first African American to play major league baseball in the modern era. This was an accomplishment, as he was the first.
  • Harry Truman's Executive Order 9981

    President Harry Truman issued Executive Order 9981 to end segregation in the Armed Services. This helps integration.
  • NAACP's five lawsuits

    On behalf of black parents and children, the NAACP filled five lawsuits against school segregation that challenged the legality of the 1986 "separate but equal" ruling in Plessy v. Ferguson.
  • Brown V. Board of Education

    Linda Brown was denied an education in a white school in Kansas in 1950. On May 17, 1954, the Supreme Court decided segregated schools were unequal and unfair. African American students could now attend "white" schools. This case overturned the previous supreme court ruling in Plessy v. Ferguson, which legalized segregation.
  • The Supreme Court Declares Bus Segregation Unconstitutional

    After African Americans boycotted the Montgomery, Alabama bus system for over a year, the bus company had agreed to desegregate its buses. A Federal District Court ruled that segregation on the buses was illegal. The Supreme Court affirmed Browder v. Gayle. Supreme Court indicated that it would not hear an appeal of that decision, and the next day, thousands of African American riders were on buses again & sitting in seats they chose.
  • U.S. Justice Department sues Terrell County

    The U.S. Justice Department sued under Civil Rights Act to force Terrell County to register black people to vote.
  • Segregation on Atlanta, GA buses

    One Federal judge throws out segregation on Atlanta, Georgia buses. This helps with integration.
