Buying of Alaska
The United States bought Alaska from Russia in 1867. Russia thought the US would off-set the design of Great Britain, which was Russias enemy. -
Transcontinental Railroad
The railroad was finished on May 10th and drove for 1,911 miles. It helped Citizens and cargo get passed around faster, leaving higher populations beyond the Mississippi River. -
Great Chicago Fire
The Great Chicago Fire started in a barn on the southwest side of Chicago. It killed 300 people, burned 17,000 structures and left 100,000 people homeless. It crossed rivers and kept burning for two whole days. -
Statue of Liberty
Richard Morris Hunt and Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi built the statue of liberty in New York. They built it as a gift to the US from France to show peace. It is now a very big tourist attraction that lot's of people love to visit. -
Johnstown Flood
On May 31st the South Fork Dam failed sent water throughout Johnstown PA. It sent 20,000,000 tons of water throughout the city killing 2,209 citizens and leaving 1,600 homes washed away. This made re-building very hard, so lot's of people were left homeless for a while. -
Explosion of USS Maine
At 9:40PM the USS Main explodes in Havana Harbor due to a fire in the coal bunker. It killed more then 260 sailers and 102 members survived. It was the beginning of the Spanish-American war. -
Newsie Strike
The Newsie strike was caused by an increase in price of the papers for the newsies but not the people buying them. This left the Newsies furious causing them to go on strike for two weeks. This caused the number of daily papers sold to go down in number. -
McKinley Assassination
Leon Czolgosz shot McKinley twice at 4:07PM in Buffalo NY. This caused Theadore Roosevelt to be put in place as president and McKinley's assassinator was sentenced to death. Eventually on the 14th, 8 days later McKinley passed away. -
Sinking of Titanic
In the Atlantic Ocean the Titanic was sailing and hit an ice burg at 2:20AM. It sank and 1,517 citizens died. Now the Titanic is a movie and quite a big event almost everyone knows about. -
Panama Canal
The Panama canal construction got re-started by the US in 1904. The US finished it in 1914 and it shortened the distance between the two sides of the US's journey by 8,000 miles. Now people can get their shipped goods way faster.
