    It took two days for a letter from Britian to reach France. By the end of war 2 billion letters and 114 million parcels had been delivered. The letter sent were censored to prevent bad news from returning to the home front.

    Ferdinands assassination started the war. A nationalist threw a domb into his car, and he passed away. On July 28, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia (who were being blamed for the attack).

    He did drill very often, for days, even months all he put in his diary was the word "drill". There were also days and days in a row that Harry says "nothing doing". Sounds like his war experience wasnt too thrilling.

    The Siege of Tsingtao was the only battle faught in the war East during WWI. Germany controlled the port of Tsingtao on the East coast of China until a Anglo-Tapanese force invaded in September 1914. Faught by Japan and the United States against Imperial Germany.

    Harry states in his diary "On Sunday, we had so many causualties, the First Aid couldnt take care of them. So many wounded lying out on the battelfirled overnight in the rain- died by morning". In another diary entry he says "Ive been advancing for 6 days and I have only eaten 2 pounds of hardtack and one meatball". Im sure the things he saw and things he had to do has scarred him for life

    His first day he was drafted and sent to camp Meade, MD. I assume he was very busy or didnt have time to write early on in the war. The next time he writes is July 6, 1918.

    Harry was a member of the 313th machine gun company. He spent a lot of time in trenches, saddly. Friemans unit was caught in a trap, surrounded on 3 sides by German troops.
