12 Billion Letters
It took two days for a letter from Britian to reach France. By the end of war 2 billion letters and 114 million parcels had been delivered. The letter sent were censored to prevent bad news from returning to the home front. -
Archduke Franz Ferdinand
Ferdinands assassination started the war. A nationalist threw a domb into his car, and he passed away. On July 28, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia (who were being blamed for the attack). -
Indian Soldiers
Approximately 1.3 million Indian soldiers served in The Great War. Over 74,000 of the Indian soldiers passed away. History has somehow forgotten the Indians fighting in the war. In memory, of the lives lost, there was a gate bulit in 1931 called the Indian Gate. -
The First Battle of the Marne
Was September 6-12, one month into WWI. The French staged a surprise attack. The Germans were left stuck in muddy and bloody trenches. On the second front, they didnt do so good. -
What Harry did during his war time
He did drill very often, for days, even months all he put in his diary was the word "drill". There were also days and days in a row that Harry says "nothing doing". Sounds like his war experience wasnt too thrilling. -
The Siege of Tsingtao
The Siege of Tsingtao was the only battle faught in the war East during WWI. Germany controlled the port of Tsingtao on the East coast of China until a Anglo-Tapanese force invaded in September 1914. Faught by Japan and the United States against Imperial Germany. -
End of 1914
The German advance had stopped and the armies had dug in, many trenches streched from the North Sea's coast to the Swiss boreder. An armed race led to the first big use of poison gas, air warfare, and tanks. The war was really starting. -
Little Willie
Little Willie was bulit in 1915 and was the first prototype to enter WWI. It carried a crew of 3 and went 3 mph. The tank weighed 18 tons!!! Also it never saw combat. -
The Battle of Verdun
The Germans attack the French at Verdun. It was the longest battle in the whole war. The battle lasted 9 months and in the end there were about 1 million casualties. -
First Tanks
The British use the first tanks ever used in battle, at Delville Wood. They were useful for breaking through barbed wire and clearing paths. But even still, they arent the decisive weapon. -
The U.S. Enters the War
Congress made a declaration of war against Germany.The U.S. joins the France and Britian side. More than 2 million U.S. soldiers fought in WWI. -
Cons about his war time
Harry states in his diary "On Sunday, we had so many causualties, the First Aid couldnt take care of them. So many wounded lying out on the battelfirled overnight in the rain- died by morning". In another diary entry he says "Ive been advancing for 6 days and I have only eaten 2 pounds of hardtack and one meatball". Im sure the things he saw and things he had to do has scarred him for life -
Harry Friemans First Day
His first day he was drafted and sent to camp Meade, MD. I assume he was very busy or didnt have time to write early on in the war. The next time he writes is July 6, 1918. -
Harry Frieman
Harry was a member of the 313th machine gun company. He spent a lot of time in trenches, saddly. Friemans unit was caught in a trap, surrounded on 3 sides by German troops. -

The peace settlement between Germany and their allies that ended WWI.
