The Comstock Lode
Gold was discovered so miners rushed out to Nevada to get it. Boomtowns were established around the mining areas. Actually striking it rich was very rare so it ended up being a large cooperation owning the land and hiring people to work for them. This way, the average man can earn SOME money when mining. When all the gold and silver was taken from the area, people rushed out of the area overnight. Everything was just left- as if there should be people living there. Ghot towns were left behind. -

The government offered 160 acres for only twelve dollars in the West. It was a good way to get people interested in moving there. Most average citizens didn't have the money to pick up and leave. Because of this, large companies and coorperations bought most of the land. This imapacted the population density in the US. Construstion of the Transcontinental Railroad
A Good Movie/Video About It!
The railroad ran from Omaha, Nebraska and Sacramento, California. They met towards the center at Promontory Point, Utah. It was a dengerous job building it, including explosives, avalanches, and bad weather. When it was completed, the country could prosper with easier access around the country. Businesses expanded and people moved out west. THe US became stronger and more prosperous. -

The Cattle Kingdom Thrived
Beef was in high demand! Cowboys herded them North to get then to the railroad. Form there, they transport around the country. Cattle Kingdom refers to the time period where the cowboys ran free, directing the cattle to the train. IT began when demand was high, but was forced to end when farmers put up their barbed fences, harsh winters occurred in 1886 and 1887, diseases killed cows, and grass was limited in supply to feed them. Once the cattle couldn't be moved, beef became more expensive. -

He's in office as the Central Pacific and Union Pacific Railroads meet at Promontroy Point, Utah. This is a huge imapct on the nation because of all the benefits railroads bring.He's in office 1869-1877 because he was reelected for a second term in 1873. -
The Barbed Wire Was Invented
This invention of the barbed wire ended the Cowboys' ability to drive cattle throughout the country. Angry farmers bought this wire from inventor, Joeseph F. Glidden. It kept the cattle out of their crops. The cowhands can no longer drive the cattle to the railroad, thus killing the industry and their reckless jobs. The Exodusters Movement
Picture foundAfrican Americans in the South's rights were being minimized now that that the North was leaving. The Jim Crow Laws, Poll Taxes, and Literacy Tests were in effect. When the opportunity to move west arose, they jumped at the chance. They all moved West in hopes of a better life. This has an effect on our population and variety of ethnicity in the different areas of the US. They called themselves the "exodusters" after "exodus", who escaped slavery in the Bible. -

Benjamin Harrison Is In Office
Benjamin Harrisson, on March 4th, 1889, became the 23rd president of the united states. He was in office as Oklahoma became a state. This is important because when a territory becomes a state, it' because it has developed enough people to run a state government and have lots of citizens. This is a big milestone for America- adding a new star to the flag. -
Oklahoma Land Rush

A negative was that people called "sooners" came early and claimed land in advance. Most people were rough and fought each other in order to claim land. People were killed, but at least the country expanded... -

The Natives were doing a "Ghost Dance" to pray. They hoped for their life to go back to the way it was before the white settlers showed up, The whites interpretted it as a military dance and became alarmed.
