    The Battle of Fort Sumter
    The battle of Fort Sumter took place on April 12 through April 14, 1861 in Charleston County, South Carolina.The battle occurred because after South Carolina’s succession the union was not just going to give the confederacy all the forts. The battle essentially started the violence of the war and gave the confederacy the first win in the war. This as a result led to other states successions and a full out civil war.

    The First Battle of Bull Run, also known as First Manassas by the Confederates, began on July 21, 1861 in Virginia. This was the first major battle that was fought on land in the Civil War. The Confederates arrived at the battlefield and the Union was prepared to fight. The Confederates attacked and the Union began to flee towards Washington D.C. Both sides were affected greatly but in the end the Confederates have victory. The battle made many men realize the seriousness of the war and how many

    The Battle of Hampton Roads took place over the days of March 8, 1862 until March 9, 1862. Although, in the end the battle had no clear victor, the south did end up causing more casualties and injuries then the north did, but the south ultimately failed because the blockade on the harbor was held and even strengthened. This left confederate waters still under union control.

    The battle of Shiloh was fought on April 6th, 1862 in Tennessee. On the first day of the battle, the Confederates seemed to be very successful but by the second day were falling apart. The Confederates attacked hard on the first day and tried driving the Union away from the river. The Union brought in reinforcements and counterattacked causing the Confederates to retreat. After this battle, the Confederates lost all hope of blocking the Union's advancement into Northern Mississippi.

    The battle of Antietam began on September 17, 1862. This was the first battle of the Civil War that was battled on northern territory. It took place in Sharpsburg, Maryland along the Antietam Creek. The battle of Antietam was recorded as one of the bloodiest days in American military history. After many hours of gruesome battling, the Confederates withdrew considering the battle a draw. The Union took this as a victory and it gave Lincoln the victory he needed to issue the Emancipation Proclam

    The Battle of Fredericksburg was fought from December 11 through December 15, 1862. The battle was fought between the union general Ambrose E. Burnside and the general Robert E. Lee for the Confederacy. The battle took place in Fredericksburg, Virginia and was a huge win for the Confederacy. The results of the battle were southern jubilation to the northern states beginning to question the tactics and judgment of the president and his leading generals.

    The Battle of Chancellorsville was a major battle that took place in Spotsylvania County, Virginia from April 30 until May 6, 1863.The Union army was led by Joseph Hooker and the Confederate army was led by Robert E. Lee. The battle is often called Lee's perfect battle because everything that he did ended up working out in a huge win. The result was that the Union felt that it should of won, but the South was very happy except about the loss of a favorite general, Stonewall Jackson.

    The battle of Gerrysburg started on July 1 and ended on July 3, 1863. The battle was fought in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.This battle had the largest totall number of casualties in the American Civil War. The Union won the huge battle giving President Lincoln the ability to deliver the Gettysburg Address. This address consecrates that battle field as a national cemetary. Also, the Battle of Gettysburg is considered the turning point in the civil war because the north was never attacked again.

    In the spring of 1862, the Union went on to take over Vicksburg controlled by the Confederates. The Union attacked the Confederates and caused many causalities forcing the Confederates to surrender. This gave Union forces command of the Mississippi River. The Union ends up winning this battle and gaining control of Vicksburg. In result of this battle, the Confederate forces lost all communication with the Trans-Mississippi Department for the rest of the war. Also, Vicksburg would not celebrate
  • Battle of Chickamauga

    Battle of Chickamauga
    On September 19th of 1863, the Chickamauga battle began. The Confederates attacked the Union's front line but could not break them. The Union's line supposedly had a gap and while trying to "fill" the gap the Confederates were able to drive some of the Union's army from the battlefield. The Confederates took a victory at this battle but it did not really give them an advantage. The Union was able to retreat to Chattanooga and Lincoln had time to bring in reinforcements.

    On May 5th, 1864, the battle of Wilderness began. It was fought in Virginia in a dense forest giving it the title “Wilderness”. Both the Union and Confederates struggled and lost many soldiers. After three days of bloody battling, the Union, led by Ulysses S. Grant, refused to retreat and headed towards the crossroads in Spotsylvania Courthouse. Unfortunately, General Lee and the Confederates arrived there before the Union did. This led to other confrontations beginning on May 8th.

    The Battle of Spotsylvania
    The Battle of Spotsylvania began on May 8, 1864 and ended on May 21, 1864. The battle was fought in Spotsylvania County, Virgina. In the end of the battle niether of the sides had gained a key win because niether general was able to break through the opositions lines. The Battle of Spotsylvania is considered one of the costliest battles because it left a total of 32,000 dead, but with no clear victor.

    Sherman's March to the Sea
    Sherman's March to the Sea began on November 15 and ended on December 21, 1864. It started with the capture of Atlanta and ended with the captured port of Savannah. Sherman used the type of warfare known as total war. This type of war was very controversial and is still to this day, but is impossible to dispute the affect that it has on an enemy. On April 26, 1865 Joseph E. Johnston surrendered his North Carolina troops to Sherman.

    Beginning on June 9th, 1864, the Siege of Petersburg was nine months of trench warfare. Petersburg was important to the Confederates because it was the Confederate capital of Richmond. The Union wanted to cut off any contact between the Confederate army and the railroad supply lines in Petersburg. By April of 1865, General Robert E. Lee surrendered meaning that the Union would win the Civil War.
  • The Assassination of President Lincoln

    The Assassination of President Lincoln
    Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, 1865 from a pistol shot to the head. Lincoln did not actually die until the next morning. Lincoln's assassin was a man named John Wilkes Booth. Booth killed Lincoln in hopes that it could rally the remaining troops of the confederacy. The assassination was all part of a conspiricy to decapitate the head of the Union. Although killing Lincoln proved to do the opposite with many Northerners attacking Booth sympathetic cities.
