Julie Smith's Technology Timeline

  • My first year of teaching

    My first year of teaching
Used an overhead projector to display still-picture information to students
  • My second year of teaching

    My second year of teaching
Six PCs brought into my classroom for student use.
  • My sixth year of teaching

    My sixth year of teaching
First school year that I clustered my student desks
  • My eighth year of teaching

    My eighth year of teaching
A Smartboard was put into every classroom! I used it mostly to record lunch count and display images from the computer.
  • My tenth year of teaching

    My tenth year of teaching
Began having my students use the Smartboard interactively with math games.
  • My eleventh year of teaching

    My eleventh year of teaching
We got rid of our basal readers and began Reader's Workshop. In Reader's Workshop (RW) students each read a chapter book of their choice that is at their reading level. My mini-lessons focus on a different reading skill each day, and students practice that skill with their own book. Students often work in groups to collaborate and share, allowing me time to work one-on-one or in small groups with students needing extra practice.
  • My twelfth year of teaching

State Farm donated their old laptops to our district. Our school got 10 laptops in a cart to be kept in the primary wing (8 classrooms). My students used these in the winter to write their informative essays on an animal of their choice using Word.
  • My fourteenth year of teaching

    My fourteenth year of teaching
I was introduced to the world of document cameras! WOW! I use this with almost every subject. It makes displaying information to my students so much easier. It makes modeling work to the students a breeze.
  • My fifthteenth year of teaching

    My fifthteenth year of teaching
Our PTO purchased 10 Chromebooks for each 3rd-grade classroom. My students used these mostly for math practice on a software program, IXL.
  • My sixteenth year of teaching

    My sixteenth year of teaching
My students now use Chromebooks throughout the day for math, reading, writing, grammar, social studies and assessments.
  • My seventeenth year of teaching

    My seventeenth year of teaching
Because of being in my master's program my head is swarming with technology ideas, but I'm waiting until I graduate to add a lot of what I have learned. I am not good and implementing new things during the school year. I've added a few things (using Kahoot, Prezi, Splash Math to name a few). I look forward to this summer reconstructing my room and lessons.
  • The 2nd half of my Eighteenth Year of Teaching

This course pushed me to start using some of the technology tools I have learned about in my classroom. One of the greatest things I learned this semester (from a TED Talk), was that I don't have to be comfortable with an app before introducing it to my students. I had my students choosing from a list of apps to create a presentation. I had the students watch kid-friendly tutorials and explore the app on their own. My students learned about Powtoons, Smore, Padlet, and Photo Story all in a week!
