The kintetoscope was "peep-show” cabinet (for a single viewer) to show short film loops. This jump-started the film industry and gave viewers a taste for that kind of entertainment. -
First movie studio is built
Thomas Edison builds the first movie studio in New Jersey. -
The cinematographe is produced
The Lumiere brothers (France) enhance Edison’s machine to produce the Cinematopgraphe, which could take and project moving images. They show the first film on a large screen. This spurs film viewing as a social event. -
