    The Mercury capsule, flown by astronaut Gus Grissom for 15 minutes in space on July 21, 1961, was hoisted to the surface on 2:15 a.m, on Tuesday July 20th from the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. It was found at a depth of more than 15,000, feet 3,000 feet deeper than the wreck of the Titanic.

    300 Gallons of Black Sludge Released In Kentucky
    One of the most serious US environmental disasters east of the Mississippi River (until 2008 and the TVA ash disaster). Over 300 million gallons of thick, black coal slurry sludge is released whan a Massey Energy Co. impoundment dam collapses near Inez (Martin County), Kentucky into the Big Sandy River’s Tug Fork and its tributaries. The spill destroyed 100 miles of streams and killed millions of fish.

    At least 120 people died in a soccer stadium stampede in Ghana.According to press reports, some 102 dead were brought to the military hospital and officials at two other hospitals confirmed a further 18 fatalities. Others are suffering from fatal and non-fatal injuries.
    "Some died of suffocation but the majority seem to have been killed by being crushed," an official said. It was Africa's worst soccer disaster ever and the third on the continent in the past month.

    The Statue of Liberty, which has been closed to the public since the September 11, 2001 terror attacks, is set to partially reopen on August 3, Interior Secretary Gale Norton announced.The reopening will allow visitors to tour the base of the statue, which houses a museum, but access to the statue itself will remain off limits.Prior to the attacks, visitors could climb to the monument's crown.The Interior Department said visitors will be allowed to gaze up into the statue's internal structure.

Food from healthy clones of cattle, swine and goats is as safe as food from non-cloned animals, the Food and Drug Administration said in a report. But the FDA said it needs more information to determine the safety of meat and milk from cloned sheep. The FDA also concluded that food from newborn cattle clones "may pose some very limited human risks.

    Osama Bin Laden is dead, President Obama announced a Sunday night, in a televised address to the nation. His death was the result of a U.S. operation launched in Abbottabad, Pakistan, against a compound where bin Laden was believed to be hiding, according to U.S. intelligence. After a firefight, a small team of American forces killed bin Laden and took possession of his body, the president said.
