JSM wrote an anonymous article published in Fraser's Magazine where he indicted the practice of slavery, particularly of African slaves. In the letter, JSM points out that the pracitce of slavery was the greatest abuse of power. He also points out that in his experience, slavery was opposed by nearly everyone in the western world that did not benefit from it. -
On Liberty
In1859, John Stuart Mill (JSM) published "On Liberty". In this seminal work, JSM outlines his inductive philosophy on power and liberty. Mill's understanding of just use of power over another as only justifiable if the exercise of power is to prevent harm. Limiting the freedom of another person simply to satisfy personal goals or progress would be arbitrary and unjust according to JSM. -
