About John Stuart Mill
John Stuart Mill was one of the greatest English language philosophers of all time. He was born in May of 1803 in the UK, and died in May of 1873. When he was 15 years old, he started his education in philosophy, government and psychology. He attended the Edinburgh University. He is very well know for his writings on scientific methodology, as well as political and social life. One of his most famous books is “John Stuart Mill On Liberty”. He was very passionate about political science. -
Philosophy of Science
John Stuart Mill had a strong view on his science methods. “The most scientific proceeding can be no more than an improved form of that which was primitively pursued by the human understanding while undirected by science”. - John Stuart Mill. He believes the growth of our knowledge is through inductive reason. Also that science exposes the extensive structure of the universe. How things GENUINELY are. -
The Ethical Theory
His theory on utilitarianism is based on the principles of “the greatest amount of good for the greatest number”. Basically the principal behind this theory is to always better oneself, as well as maximize the good in others. “Those only are happy (I thought) who have their minds fixed on some object other than their own happiness; on the happiness of others, on the improvement of mankind, even on some art or pursuit, followed not as a means, but as itself an ideal end”. - John Stuart Mill. -
His Contribution to the World
John Stuart Mill played an important role to the world with is theory’s. In my option, his biggest contribution was his voice in women’s rights, freedom of speech, and liberty. His views on science helped people by removing the obstacles with false philosophies placed in the path of social progress. He was very passionate with his work until his death in 1873. -
