    Polkinghorne attended Trinity College, Cambridge, and earned multiple degrees; his bachelor's degree (1952) and master's degree (1955) in mathematics, as well as his doctorate (1956) in quantum field theory. He was a lecturer in mathematical physics at the University of Edinburgh, then Cambridge until 1968 when he was made a professor of mathematical physics. Polkinghorne earned his second doctorate in theoretical elementary particle physics in 1974.
