John then staggered up the Dakota's stairs and collapsed as he walked in. The police arrived and realized that John would need to be taken to the hospital in the back of the police car because if they waited for the ambulence, John would never have made it. John died at the arrival of the hospital.

A memorial garden named Strawberry Fields was made in Central Park right across the street from the Dakota apartment building where John was killed. Yoko had John's body cremated so that she could scatter the ashes in the Strawberry Fields.
