John Dupre
John Dupre is British Philosopher of Science, born July 3rd 1952. Dupre went to Oxford and Cambridge. He is best know for his work in Pluralistic metaphysics. -
Determinism/Reductionism
Determinism and Reductionism were two ideals that Dupre states are assumptions that go against science. Reductionism is the idea that everything can be simplified to a physical explanation. For example, Psychology can be reduced to Neurology which reduces to biology which reduces to chemistry which is physical. Determinism is the ideal that everything is causal. -
Metaphysical Pluralism
John Dupre advocated for a non-traditional approach to the reductionist model of science. Dupre supported the Idea of a pluralistic model of science. Dupre holds this because he believes that the world is inherently pluralistic in nature. His first book discussing this is "The Disorder of Things". Harvard called this book a manifesto that attacks the ideals of scientific unity. -
Dupre vs. Evolution
Dupre stated during an interview in 2012 that evolution theory is in crisis, but that scientists should welcome the crisis as it is a needed paradigm shift. Dupre states that the crisis does not reject the evolutionary theory, that it is a major reorganization of the theory. -
