Phone Phreaking
Phone phreaking was the practice of hacking phone lines rather than computers. It was around this time when John Draper became involved with this community when he was transmitting his pirate radio to broadcast phone numbers to get feedback on the reception so that he and other phreaks could improve the practice of phreaking with higher developed technology. -

When John Draper was 21, he decided to enter the Air Force and displayed his dubious personality with legally creating a pirate radio station. Afterward being honorably discharged in and relocated to Silicon Valley 1968, he continued working in the military as an engineering technician at National Semiconductor, and then worked on an early cordless phone design at at Hugle International. -
Cap'n Crunch
In the late 60s, he became known as Cap'n Crunch as he was hacking AT&T phone lines with a whistle that he discovered from a Cap'n Crunch cereal box. The whistle itself emitted a 2600Hz tone, which was the same as the AT&T phone reset frequency. He was able to reset the line with a long whistle blow, and then dial the numbers with short whistle blows, with three short blows as dialing 3 and etc. Because of this, he was able to attain free phone calls, and became known as Cap'n Crunch.
