Early life
John Dewey was born on this date to his parents Archibald Dewey and Lucina Artemisia, in Burlington, Vermont. John was the third of four children, who were all boys. His parents lost one of the boys as a baby. John's mother was born into money; her father was a well-off farmer. His father owned a grocery business but left the company to join the Civil War. Education
John received his Bachelor's from the University of Vermont in 1879, then five years later received his doctorate. He began teaching philosophy and psychology at the University of Michigan. From here, he gained interest in experimental and child psychology, which is where John Dewey started to develop his philosophy of education. Philosophy of education
John Dewey taught philosophy at the University of Chicago, where he worked on the philosophy of education and pedagogy. Between the two theories, John believed the students would learn better with examples based on real life.
