    John Dewey was born on this date to his parents Archibald Dewey and Lucina Artemisia, in Burlington, Vermont. John was the third of four children, who were all boys. His parents lost one of the boys as a baby. John's mother was born into money; her father was a well-off farmer. His father owned a grocery business but left the company to join the Civil War.
