    John Dewey is born in Burlington, Vt. to Lucina Artemisia Rich and Archibald Sprague. Archibald owned a grocer business. Lucina was a well known Christian. John technically had three brothers.
  • "The Metaphysical Assumptions of Materialism" and "The Pantheism of Spinoza"

    John's life work starts as he decides to make philosophy his a career. The Journal of Speculative Philosophy publises his first articles, "The Metaphysical Assumptions of Materialism" and "The Pantheism of Spinoza". Dewey's Metapysics became more popular.

    Dewey publishes "My Pedagogic Creed". Around this time Dewey's theories begin rising in popularity. He argues that teaching by being a learner with the students is the most effective way to teach. This contradicts the entire country's curriculum.

    John Dewey moved to the east coast due to disagreements. He was soonafter elected president of the American Phsycological Association. This is the largest network of phsycologists in the world. This was important for Dewey because it increased his popularity and helped solidify his position in history. He became very famous and was able to use this influence to change society.

    University of Chicago elementary and high schools became Laboratory schools. Dewey works hard and founds the school of education at this university.

    Dewey becomes a proffesor at Columbia University. There he will lecture and teach philosphy. He will also teach a few lectureship classess... Likely by lecturing.

    Typhoid fever goes around in Ireland. While visiting, Dewey's son Gordon dies. He was 8 years old and had no chance against the typhoid.

His theory on Progressive Education becomes more popular and will become increasingly popular past his death.Progressive education is the idea that people learn while doing.

    Dewey and associates form the Chicago School of Pragmatism core. This was a turbulent time for Dewey. One of his associates dies during the process. He also loses a grandaughter.

    Dewey works hard to implement a little "socialism" in government programs. This includes funding for schools which was very important during the depression. Franklin D. Roosevelt also becomes president during this time.
